                Had to split up the above posts due to 10k character limit...
                So I connected up a TTL interface to the drive and the above is what I got out.
                Of interest to me is:
                LT No of Defect: 530
                LS No of Defect: 12709
                LV No of Defect: 788
                LM No of Defect: 0
                LR No of Defect: 1
                LL No of Defect: 35

                Now I'm not sure which of them corresponds to P-List & G-List (A-List on Samsung actually) but I'm willing to bet the one with 12709 is the growth list...
                Still have not figured out how to clear it yet.

                        Back in 2009, IIRC, I was given a 2007 Western Digital Caviar WD5000AAJS 500 GB and it never showed bad sectors, not errors like a classic bad platter.

                        Instead, I would get random silent corruption and the Windows Vista installer would often give an error message about being unable to redeploy the engine or something like that and sometimes, if goes further and looks like it's gonna make it, but on reboot, the boot loader failed with an Windows file integrity check error. (error on a black screen)

                        And MHDD don't find a thing wrong! The errors look more board-related or cache related...

                        So 7 years later, I suspect oxidized contacts or the like!

                        The error message I got, if I was even able to get past the earliest part, looked more like a Windows-equivalent of a GRUB error.

                        It looked a lot like it didn't even get far enough to load the Windows kernel! (Which at that point I would expect a BSOD)

                            Oh wow.

                            As in the other thread I was trying to revive/re-bootstrap an old Apple IIe and wasn't successful reading or writing any disk. Both drives behave similarly.

                            Then I was wondering, what about my PC floppy drives? I have a HH 5¼" HD drive and a combo 5¼+3½ drive. I tried formatting the disk that wouldn't work in the Apple and it didn't work in the PC either!

                            Then I tried a HD 5.25 disk ... it won't even touch the disk either! Just like the Apple DD disk, "Not Ready!"

                            Weird. Seems the PC drive is having trouble clamping...

                            i recently bought a new wd re4 2tb with 2014 datecodes. when i got around to testing it tho in victoria hd tester, the write speed was very slow at 14 mb/s with a 256 sector transfer size. when i increased the transfer size to 1024 sectors, the write speed increased slightly to 44 mb/s. read speeds and sector verify speeds were fine and at normal speeds.

                            so i just ass-u-med the drive's poor performance was due to it being an advanced format drive and i was using it on winxp. when i tried cloning my system disk to this wd re4 2tb drive and writing to it in linux, the write speed...

                            I thought I'd throw out some of my personal experiences in the last 12 months with Intel iMacs, 2.5" SATA SSD drives and Fusion drive data recoveries.

                            As a backgrounder, Apple never fitted a 2.5" SSD's to these iMacs. Apple's SSD option was a system of 32GB NVMe blade drive (NGFF connector) and Seagate 1TB 2.5" HDD, married together in software to become a Fusion drive. Non Fusion systems have just the 1TB Seagate HDD.
