If the browser tearing is FF, it's not Linux's fault this time-- Mozilla disabled hardware acceleration on Linux for reasons that I do not remember (regardless of whether the "use hardware acceleration where available" box is checked). If you force enable it, it goes away (in my experience) and has zero ill effects.
I use Firefox a lot in Linux (Mint 18 Cinnamon), and it never tears anymore. It is at least as smooth as in Windows, if not a bit more so, and it seems to be better on memory. The tearing was truly horrendous before I force-enabled hardware acceleration-- I found it intolerable. Had I not found a fix, I would have gone back to Win 7 as my main OS too (they're set as dual boot).
Linux isn't as well-rounded graphically as Windows, certainly; a lot of administrative things that are handled easily in Windows graphically are usually performed via command line in Linux. I can deal with that, though, as I rarely need to change drivers or do other things like that, and for day to day use, the graphical desktop environment does everything very well.
For me, Mint is more than ready for desktop use; I do all of my daily routine stuff on Linux as easily as in Windows.
I know you've already gone back, so there's no need to post the instructions on how to fix the FF tearing (or to go dig up the url to the other thread), and I don't know that this was actually the browser you were using either... just something to consider if you do decide to give it another shot.
