Either use it offline where updates don't matter or use a different operating system.
I've been using my Sony Centrino Pentium M 1.5ghz 1g mem with Pro XP SP3 mostly streaming IPTV and it does a great job, also do browse the web and so far no issues,as long you turn off updates and only go to trusty sites you will be fine,i even travel with it to Europe and had no issues,if i do i just reinstall OPS from my recovery disks.

Yes no disagreements there, it's what I meant too!
Thing is MS seems hell bent on making the lives of IT admins harder.
So I'm not counting at it, especially this late in the lifecycle of the OS!

Installed without a hitch, and I highly recommend it.

XP will be updated until 2019, so it's still a viable OS for production environments. After applying the SP, Microsoft Update showed new updates for POSReady 2009, installed those, and everything was hunkydory.
Hi mockingbird; can one download to a CD SP4 ?and is SP4 a Pack of SP2,Sp3 ?thanks.

          Re: WinXP Sp 4?

I asked this question, and was told that it is designed to fit on TWO CDs post-slipstream...

I asked exactly how that works, but no one has answered yet, so I shall ask again.

I think the best thing to do is to start off with an SP0 original ISO when doing the slipstream. You can do it the old-fashion way, through the command line, or use RVMi or nLite.

They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."

No, your computer can be owned on internet connect.

And I don't understand why you don't use "alternative operating systems" like Linux Mint. That works fine on my Pentium M notebook.
But I've had problems with Zorin OS...

Still, Linux Mint works fine, in the 32bit Cinamon version...

I really do not understand why people want to continue using Windows XP and do not understand the security problems it has...

If the user isn't competent with security, then yes....it can be a security risk... If you know what you're doing, XP is still very usable, reliable, and secure.

You don't win anything and I repeat, it is NOT SP4!

With some (non-newbie) effort you can download and create your own slipstream with all post XP SP3 updates included with SP3 but it is NOT SP4 because SP4 does NOT exist and people should stop calling it that and stop posting useless links.

I use it everyday and haven't got anything. I install it on old Atom netbooks and Pentium M laptops for customers. And they all thank me, because anything else is too heavy for those machines.

I never had any of the problems you are talking about. And all the infected PCs that come to me for OS reinstall and disinfection have been infected while browsing by clicking on the wrong "DOWNLOAD" link in torrent or porn pages.

Less often they get infected from flash drivers.

None of them gets "owned" by hackers

it would be crap, it's not meant for old cpu's

                          try Vector Linux instead.

I've been using XP unSP4 v2 for a few months, and very happy with it

Thanks for the heads up about v3.1a, which installs just as smoothly as v2

FWIW, one of the things it installs is QFECHECK, which shows for v3.1a after a clean install :

Thanks for the heads up about v3.1a, which installs just as smoothly as v2

FWIW, one of the things it installs is QFECHECK, which shows for v3.1a after a clean install :
I now have a twitchy right index finger, oh my.

I couldn't have said it any better, thanks.

At this point, XP is only for XPerts

                                    Re: WinXP Sp 4?

The most meaningful thing you can do to secure XP is probably to do everything you can with a user account and use administrator accounts as little as you can.

I've still got XP on my 2005 Compaq (HP) M2000z laptop, which I had upgraded to a Turion ML-40 CPU (2.2Ghz; 1.6 ML-34 was the original) many years ago. I also had swapped the stock Broadcom wireless card for an Atheros; at the time, I had a Super-G router and I wanted the laptop to be able to use Super-G without an external wireless NIC. I had to edit the BIOS to get it to accept the new wireless card... yeah, it's an HP all right.

I put Win 10 on it just to see if it works (an Apple fanatic was going on and on about how his/her 2007 era Macbook worked with the latest version of OSX, and remarked, "I'd like to see a PC that old work with the newest Windows," so I tried it.)

It worked and was stable, though it did feel a bit sluggish compared to XP (perhaps not surprisingly!). The M2000z only has 1GB of RAM, and part of that is dedicated to the integrated GPU, putting the total available below the 1GB minimum specified by MS. I might upgrade it just for the heck of it to its max of 2GB just to see how well it can run 7.

The ATI Radeon 200M graphics don't have a Win 10 driver (though the generic MS driver performed a lot better than the old VgaSave driver did); some people reported having some luck installing the Vista driver in compatibility mode, but that was about when my interest in messing with it ran out, and I put XP back on (restored from a disk image). I've got the POSready hack in place, and it works nicely for an 11 year old laptop (with an 11 year old XP installation).

How could I not have at least one working Win XP system? Blasphemy.
