    Today I have learnt that........

Here I am just going to blog. Feel free to post comments on the news.

Today I have learnt that :

Solaris 10 is now available as a free download for x64/x86 or SPARC
    http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/get.jsp#0

You can use pentium M processors on a Aopen i855 GMEm-LFS desktop motherboard for quieter operation. Includes HSF with speed throttling.

The Sharp LL-172G-B is a budget 17" TFT worth checking out.

I am still in love with my samsung 173p though.

today i have learnt that :

IBM, Sony and Toshiba are working on the cell processor which will power the ps3. it is quite interesting.

Absynth 3 is a great synth (and you can run it standalone)
    http://www.nativeinstruments.de/index.php?absynth3_us

Mdaemon is a kick ass mailserver on windoze. Easy to install and admin as well. Takes a bit of time to become familiar with the interface because there are so many options but you need them to customise it perfectly. perfect for a small office or even a large one. the exchange killer it is called. IMAP shared mailbox, whatever you want it does it. runs on normal win as well no server required. serve mail from the ip port and serve attachments from the internal webserver/webmail server. can run nice on dialup as well for those branch offices in the middle of nowhere. dials to send and can dial at specific times to check multiple mailboxes. spam filter, attachment filter, whatever you want it does it. licensing costs are reasonable as well, even for a soho.

i learnt also these facts :
    - the solaris cde desktop is not something you want to see on the morning after a heavy night out.
    - centos is easier to install and admin than solaris
    - korn is a good band
    - nichicon is gonna be in the shit.
    - secretaries are a PIA
    - i wish my cellphone could be a premium number to make some money from all this cellphone tech support. At least i get paying recommendations though. funny how a long lost ex-employee calls "Hey how are you doing, long time no see, by the way can you help me setup my new HP 19" tft............sure i do it for $50

I learned how robust Nissan engines are............. It was 73 degrees again yesturday, so I took my other 300ZX out for a spin. Its been sittting about 2 months without being driven, and has a chatter in the valvetrain, thats why I got it for almost nothing....

Anyway, I beat the hell out of it for a while, held it at 7kRPM for a substancial amount of time going down the highway, and it didn't come apart like I was half expecting... It's getting the TT swap soon, so if it went BANG, I wouldn't be too concerned.......but it didn't!!

        Long live Nissan!!

Dayum, I have far more crucial things to do besides play with cars, but on warm days in February, I cant help it....

Maybe I'll have something productive to add this week, weather is supposed to turn to crap....

          http://www.drudgereport.com/flash3ph.htm

350 food products from big names withdrawn in UK for containing banned genotoxic (damage cellular dna) dye Sudan 1 which is used to illegally colour some chilli powders from india and other places. :o

            today i learnt that :

Deception Point by Dan Brown is a GREAT read (i get handed a lot of secondhand airport novels from travelling friends) reads like a movie as well so i guess you know what will happen. Anyway i read it through cover to cover non stop which is rare for me.

linux server admin is a whole lot easier with webmin. Especially if you are coming from a windows background. Can set up samba and whatever and it is much easier to figure out what is going wrong. I am glad I found it.
            http://www.webmin.com/
Gotta be careful about access to port 10000 on your server though otherwise webmin is a big security hole.

From this Chinese computer supplier you can order Rubycon MCZ and ZLH capacitors from as well as your other computer parts.

I learned that a nightmare it is to change a forum package from PHPBB to vBulletin............ After 3 failed import attemps, I finally got it...... The slightest error in the importer config script, and it'd fail part way through, and I'd have to completely scrap it and start over...

Now I'm on to modding the template.... I have to admit, I like the default template, it's very clean... So I'm building on that... I'll likely photochop a new header and a couple other mods, and that'll be about it for now....

                today i learnt that......

samba/cups/bind caching dns is gonna provide an excellent solution for our office without the octopus tentacles of active directory polluting everything. laserjets 4000tn and 4050n have passed testing under samba/cups on the test server and the performance exceeds the windows alternative.

the only prob is that the HP DL380 support pack is not going to install under centos unless i specify individual drivers. so i guess we will splash for RHEL for that server.

centos will run another server (the test server) built from parts running identical services as backup server in case i am on vacation but with a large ide raid array to hold all the data since whenever

also the mailserver will still run win2k server and mdaemon mailserver cos it is fulfilling our requirements from day 1. That will get upgraded to a new intel original mobo from the asus and will have a pci scsi controller and 2 scsi disks in raid 1. Hmmmm you can see some money is gonna be required.

today i learnt nothing else cos i had my head in various linux manuals. tomorrow i go walking in the hills with some friends and then eat and drink lots of beers.
