Windows 7 showing two updates, always, on shutdown

Windows 7 SP1 build 7601. On Start Menu the shutdown icon has an exclamation mark meaning updates available. When shutting down, it shows 1 of 2 updates, then shuts down. It seems to never install the updates and they always show as ready to install.

Anyone know of a fix? Can provide more info on request.

oi yea. srsly stop that update sheet from running. you do NOT want to install that win10 sheet over your valuable win7 which is going to be the next winxp by being the next longest running ms os.

Go into Windows Update under Control Panel and view the history of installed updates.
Maybe it's obvious there what goes wrong?

I have had that in the past. Eventually, the next patch Tuesday fixed the problem.

The only machine I had running Windows 7 is now dual booting Lubuntu and I won't be booting Windows 7 until next year just before the free upgrade ends.

The only reason I might need Windows is to run Canada tax program, but I have gotten it to run in wine on debian 8.

Which updates Tom ? i've seen similar behavior in the past when i've updated various machines. Have you tried manually downloading the updates and installing them ?

wine is moving so fast that it gets an update every couple of weeks now!

One other idea is to run disk cleanup so it deletes temporarily files, etc. Maybe one of the updates has corrupt directories, temporary files, etc.

According to this article, it looks like even numbered wine releases are stable. 1.7 is getting bi-weekly updates and new features.

                  http://phoronix.com/scan.php?page=ne...table-Releases

On my Debian 8.2 system, I'm running

                  $ apt-cache showpkg wine
                  Package: wine
                  Versions:
                  1.6.2-20 (/var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.ca.debian.org_debian_dists_jessie_main_binary-i386_Packages) (/var/lib/dpkg/status)

It also worked on Debian 7.x.

Re: Windows 7 showing two updates, always, on shutdown

The updates that have failed were:
                      - Security Update for Microsoft Excel 2013
                      - Update for Microsoft PowerPoint 2013

Gonna try removing them or installing manually.

A friend of mine has an MSDN membership and he gets five copies of MS Office, so he gives away four to friends. Lucky me, I got one, a fully legit version too. (MS Office 2013 is actually really good. Old Office and Open Office were about the same, but 2013 just kills it - sorry to anyone who likes the FOSS stuff...)

Right click on those entries and select Hide or whatever option is there to disable the update.

Try a manual install of them first. If that doesn't work and it doesn't give an error message then the reason for failure should be in the system log files.

That's funny, because someone gave me a computer to fix, the updates kept failing.
Turns out it was a security update for IE ...
The person didn't even use IE so I just deleted it

Windows must have problems with security updates... then again, almost all updates are likey security updates XD

Besides, it was a Vistatrash computer, and old at that. Might have been like 10 years old or so

I have been waiting hours for a couple of updates to download, and the same to install on win7, I think it has something to do with win10 being push on peoples systems, maybe its done deliberately, it been happening about a month now on a lot of win7 systems that I have loaded
