    PC Killing HDDS?

Hi there I run my minecraft server from a custom built pc, it is kept in a garage and in a safe place away from vibrations etc but recently I have had nothing but problems with hard drives...

It all started when i had a 500gb storage drive it worked perfectly, then one day i went to do a backup and the disk was full of bad sectors, luckily the data was backed up the day before... So I ran HD Tune and zeroed the drive and it made the bad sectors dissapear, but it didnt reallocate it just dissapeared, so I then ran 3 full error scans and it passed with no bad sectors, so I thought hmm and reused it for less important data then a week later it had that problem again. I also had a 500gb drive for the os (was windows 8.1, then 10, then windows server 2012 r2) and it failed with similar issues, except the os would boot and kind of work... Now the os is on an ssd and is so far so good, except the ssds power on hours keeps resetting?, but the drive i store backups on (tons of zip files and my website data) is currently having the same issue :I

    The drives were
the 500gb were both seagates from sky + HD boxes
the website one is a dell branded wd 250gb drive

it also does this slowly over time with any drive i use in this pc, EXCEPT the 2tb seagate i have in it
thats the only drive that hasnt failed yet i can provide screenshots if needed

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

This is the drive SMART logs from hdtune and the files on the left window are the files that are still on the drive

Also the data on the drive isnt critically important and I dont care if the drive dies i would just like to know why this is happening

WD drives, and to a lesser extent Seagates, have problems with oxidisation at the HDA contacts. If that is your problem, then gentle scrubbing with an eraser should fix it.

            Oxidisation on Western Digital PCBs:
            http://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.p...6&t=649&p=1789

BTW, if your PSU is on the way out, then be aware of this:

Catastrophic failures in Western Digital PCBs:
            http://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.p...&t=1119&p=5033

You can avoid the damage, and protect your data, by flowing a blob of solder over the zero-ohm resistors. Then the TVS diodes will do the job they were designed for.

I'm not familiar with all Corsair models, but I know quite a few of their lower end models have CapXon and Samxon GF caps in them. So if you got one like that, then yes, that could be the cause of the problem too.

I suggest starting with the simple stuff first, though. Have you tried changing the SATA data cable(s) in your PC yet, just to see if that helps? If not, try that first. Then check the power supply (ideally post pictures of the inside of it here).

Finally, what motherboard do you have in your PC? Some chipsets, like the nVidia MPC61 that have the bumpgate problem, can start acting up and causing all sorts of issues (I have a motherboard that is starting to loose the LAN controller occasionally, for example).

                  Re: PC Killing HDDS?

A problem with SATA cables will show up in the SMART UDMA CRC Error Rate attribute, not reallocated sectors.

Thanks, Momaka. I almost cited the same examples...

Also check the power cables- some Molex->SATA power adapters have poor connections and randomly drop the supplies. Killed the +5 to -5 converters (for the REC/PB amps) on two Samsung/Seagate "crossover period" drives that way. I lucked out and replaced the SMT inductors and MOSFETs on those- that was in one of my personal systems.

Light green could be either Taicon (okay) or Samxon GF (bad). Open it up and post some pictures.

I cant currently open the PSU but the caps in it are CrapXon i think.

Don't keep it in your garage. One of the worse places you can put it Rain can cause oxidation on any metal and unless your garage is Air conditioned there is a chance this will happen, i've seen this

What you're getting is I/O errors that can make the computer think sectors are bad, albeit the HDD might have oxidation on it as a post mentioned above. Put it in the house

dvr hdd's typically have high hours so those dieing off should be no surprise.the one showing bads in the scan should get zerofilled then retested.it should do 1 of 2 things.
recertify the current pendings and test ok or reallocate.
if they dont reallocate and they test bad again the firmware is corrupt.possibly from a weak head or bad media.
