    Re: PC Killing HDDS?

one had about 200 days power on hours and one had a massive 9 hours (upgraded my sky box the first day i got it)

and for this WD i think its teardown time

i allways like to try and fix them before dumping them though, i even have a 3tb wd red which failed in the same way as this drive i might pop that back in later just to see if anyone here has any ideas because the 3tb is a good drive

it was taken out of a 3tb wd mycloud because it would no longer boot one day but i could read it in the pc and transfer all the data from it then the next day it was full of bad sectors and would hang the bios

this was the full error scan earlier

and now so far its like this after another zero but it didnt reallocate any

so some are going away but its not reallocating so i dont know what its doing

              Re: PC Killing HDDS?

A drive won't reallocate an LBA to a spare sector unless it can eventually read the data without error, or until it knows that the original data are no longer required. Drives usually retest the bad sector and return it to service if confirmed good, or replace it with a spare if it fails again. I suspect this is to allow for bad writes during shock events or high ambient temperatures or power spikes.

AIUI, HD Tune is performing a read test, not a write test. Therefore the drive cannot reallocate the bad sectors until the OS writes new data to them. Until that time they are marked as "pending reallocation". If the drive were to reallocate such a sector of its own accord, what data would it write to the spare, and what data would the OS see?

BTW, the drive is reporting 41 Offline Uncorrectable sectors. AFAIK, these are bad sectors that the drive has detected during its background media scan.

this is also a server and its rarely rebooted, this similar thing happend on all the drives that have "failed" strangely it didnt happen on the 2tb or the ssd

also what does anyone think of this disk... cant it be fixed or not? i cant RMA because it was from a wd mycloud and i had to open it because the data was more important than getting a new disk, so im stuck

you need to get the psu open,
you need to try new sata cables,
and you need to try the drives on a different computer.

also, i'm not so sure you cant return the bare drive under warranty.

Just get a Torx 6 screwdriver and a soft pencil eraser and do what the data recovery professionals do. Then test it again.

if your implying he should open or mess with the drive, dont.
atleast not until he has mailed wd about warranty coverage.

Otherwise, you are just wasting your time running these scans and finding a bunch of BS every time.

get rid of hdd power adapters/splitters.cheap ones can cause your power cycle issue.
and open up power supply to inspect.
had a job in that the symptom was the hdd clicked when a phone was plugged into usb and this often locked up the system.and when customer tried to backup to a usb hdd the system clicked and bsod.bad caps and fan in a delta oem unit.that hdd had a ridiculous power cycle count for a 2 year old pc!

OK i believe the problem is solved. The caps in the psu were Crapxons so i replaced with some spare caps i had lying around (temporarily) and the drives no longer power cycle

but i also have another issue unfortunately, my 80gb samsung HDD that had about 5 years of power on hours has died. i smelled smoke from the server but nothing stopped working so i pulled the plug anyways and the samsung pcb has burnt but the drive worked while it was smoking???. anyways it doesnt work now and was wondering if its possible to repair it again sorry for the low quality pic but heres the part thats burnt

Edit: Higher resolution picture of hdd board

                                probably repairable.
you need to clean the soot and tar off with IPA and find a foro of one that is o.k.. so we can see what's there.

No, I'm not implying anything of the sort. If you had bothered to read my articles, you would have seen exactly what I'm talking about.

                                      Re: PC Killing HDDS?

The Samsung HDD has been killed by on overvoltage on the +5V supply. You need to replace the 5V TVS diode (which will probably be shorted) and the zero-ohm resistor.

                                      http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/HD103UJ_TVS.jpg

If you now remove the WD PCB, you will probably see the catastrophic failure that I warned you about earlier. Moreover, since the overvoltage hit the 5V supply, you will probably find that the drive has sustained a damaged preamp on the headstack, which now makes it a paperweight.

if this happened *after* you changed some caps in the psu, what did you put in???

that happened before replacing the caps. thats the reason i replaced them and i checked voltages and they were correct and stable (old caps 5v was jumping from 4 - 6, 12 was 10 - 14!!) corsair and their low quality crapacitors
