    Western Digital HDD firmware update

I need to update the firmware in a Western Digital black HDD WD1002.
I scoured the WD website, support forums and can't find the utility software. WD seems to have deleted any references for firmware update procedure etc. ?
Only found s/w for external Passport USB drives.

Either I am stupid or WD has totally become a !@%^&!@Q corporation.

    both.
because you should have emailed custommer support and asked.

Re: Western Digital HDD firmware update

I contacted Western Digital phone support, and they no longer offer firmware updates or the firmware update utility for any of their internal hard drive products.
Bad bugs, like the auto-parking in Red and Green drives have a dedicated .exe utility that you can use.

Why do you need to update the firmware? AFAIK, WD Blacks have never had problems with buggy firmware.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

Re: Western Digital HDD firmware update

It looks like most WD HDD bugs are in the firmware settings on their HDD's. Figured it was best to update the f/w but you cannot do that...

I have a WD1002FAEX 1TB HDD that works fine on an older SATAII M/B but on a newer SATAIII M/B, I keep getting system errors in Win7, only on boot-up and after waking from sleep:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort5. Event ID 11 ATAPI and it hangs a while.
Western Digital Data LifeGuard and SMART report shows no evidence of any problem. The drive works fine otherwise.
There's mention of a firmware settings mistake on some WD drives: http://www.sevenforums.com/performan...andomly-6.html
I'm still looking for utility wdspd.exe to fix.
Utility wdidle3.exe is a fix for the head autopark bug on the greens and reds that wears out the drives.
You can't find these on WD's website, they don't even mention their problems or fixes anymore

Re: Western Digital HDD firmware update

Have you tried upgrading (or downgrading) your SATA\AHCI\RAID drivers in Windows?

I have had weird things with my SATA drives disappearing after resume from standby on my MSI 760GX-based board after the Radeon video driver package upgraded my AHCI drivers from the MSI specific ones to the generic AMD ones.

I had to rollback to the ones from MSI at that point, although since then, the latest AHCI drivers from AMD since last year or so have worked fine.
