MP- I've been mapping network drives for years at the house (me + my parents) and never had an issue... the wifi is WPA2 protected so that shouldn't be an issue.

Crytowall and crytolocker, all it takes is one machine to get infected and encrypt those drives and mapped drives.

if it sees one but not the other, that is an entirely different problem

the client is working fine, if it sees another computer on the network.

if its a name issue, you can always try:

//ip-address

like

//192.168.1.5

or whatever, that should work if its a name resolution problem

I never use network discovery, i just use // name for my server (ubuntu 14 x64 server). Never had a problem (that is until my 10 server fucked up and I had to re-do it with 14 fresh and copy over all the shit from my other raid drive). Write speeds SUCK using ext compression

Thank you all for the advice! I really do appreciate it. My laptop already runs cleaner and faster with some junk software uninstalled and the bugs cleared out. I really could care less about it connecting to the printer and server here, as we will be moving houses hopefully by the time fall comes around. I should not need to be printing anything, or if I do, I'll put it on a flash drive or email it to myself or something. I appreciate the fact that he is putting the work into it though. The computer is fast enough for my tastes (I could probably tolerate dial-up internet, but enjoy the quicker response) so if this work stops here, I would be fine. If getting this thing perfect eases his mind, so be it. I'd rather let it be. But that is me. *shrugs*

True, but that hasn't been an issue. Short of nuking the filesever, I don't see an alternative that isn't any more vulnerable. I see plenty of enterprise setups that have networked drives so I still don't see what's so bad here.

The method of infection is drive-by download, but once a machine is infected, it will encrypt all drives including those mapped. Doesn't matter if it's a network share or not, it's a mapped drive and that is all it needs.

Ratdude is mapping drives, all it takes is one machine on his network to get infected and he can kiss his fileserver goodbye.

Seen this, not funny.
Thankfully it was one of the early ones where it just made the files all hidden and replaced them with .exe.
I take that as 'proof of concept'.

Then you track down which one of ~120 machines started it and how many more are now infected.

I was in an aircraft school years ago. Sitting next to me was my best friend. The company gave each of us an email account but I never used mine. After a break he checked his email, I heard him say Hey I've got mail. Ooh and somebody loves me. I looked over just as he clicked and the screen went wild. New windows opening all over the place. He quickly shut it down. Just then the instructor walks in talking about the I Love You Virus. We didn't say anything, but about 20 minutes later a couple IT guys opened the door asking if someone opened the virus in this room. My friend sheepishly put up his hand. They almost ran over to our desk. Unplugged his computer and took off with it like it was about to explode. The guy carrying it was clutching it to his chest, all hunched over, walking fast out the door with the other guy close behind. That was the last I heard about it. I wonder what the rush was about.
