This is by design.

When a HDD detects read errors in some sectors, it marks them as "Pending".
A Pending sector is reallocated only if a write operation to it fails. If write operation to it succeeds, it is unmarked.

I had few drives do that, they usually fix themselves but for those that won't I wipe the drive, usually fix those pesky pending sector.

I have wiped/zero-filled drives and it doesn't reset all SMART data but it does clear pending sector count.

If a read fails on a sector, it is marked as pending. The next time it is written to, the drive checks if it can be read. If it was readable, the drive clears the "pending" marker and the sector is returned to normal operation. This can be caused if, for example, the drive got bumped during the writing just enough to make it mess up. If, however, the freshly-written data is unreadable when the drive checks, the sector is marked as "reallocated" and the data is written elsewhere.

What's happening to Mad_Professor and SteveNielsen is that a read failed at some point, the sector got marked as pending, then when they wrote something else to it, the drive checked the data it just wrote, and after finding it readable, removed the sector from the pending list.

Exactly. Good explanation which I was too lazy to do A zero fill is nothing more than writing zeros to every available sector on the drive, which includes pending sector errors. It isn't capable of working beyond the drives internal sector mapping/re-allocation, which SMART interfaces with. I've seen things claim they can set all SMART data to "zero" but have yet to see one that actually does and fail to understand why it would be desirable to be able to do so in the 1st place.

So the media is ok just somthing went wrong causing 8 sectors to be marked as pending.
I'm used to drives I zero fill to turn pending into reallocated.
All 8 sectors were in the space one file occupied only knew somthing was wrong when copy the file.
Ran hd tune smart showed 8 pending sectors run a media scan 8 sectors un readable.
So zero filled it.

The device, \Device\Harddisk3\DR3, has a bad block.
event log is full of that lol.
Smart is still reading zero pending.

check your controller. the one on my system always reports ONE bad sector, even on a drive that is brand new and report none on other controllers.

This is the second pc i'm testing it on.
My friend gave me this drive after he could not copy a file off it and i found smart to contain pending sectors.
also the bad sectors showed up in a surface scan.

What I find interesting is they showed up as a block of 8 then 16

0xB8 = End-to-End error. This attribute is part of the S.M.A.R.T Error Detection and Correction process. it is a count of parity errors which occur in the data path to the media via the drive's cache.
this attribute failing is an indicator of imminent electromechanical failure and can also lead to a bad sector count when trying to read a sector and failing because of a parity error.

I will see if errors are all over or just in one loacation to me it seems like there is head failuer I wil do tests on start of drive errors were occoring on last third.
Been a 3TB drive it takes some time to do end to end scan.
Smart extended test passes so that no help
