    Hard drive issue

    Hi guys
I have a 80gb Ide hard drive installed with windows xp. The problem is the hard drive will only work as a slave drive.as soon as you set the jumpers to a master drive the pc will not detect the hard drive and windows will not boot.
it does not get detected in bios (but will if set as a slave drive)
    Any thoughts
    cheer mark?

If you're using an 80-wire drive cable, the drive has to be configured for Cable Select (CS), not Master or Slave. Also Western Digital drives have two Master settings, one for when the drive is the only one on the cable, the other when there's also a Slave drive on the cable. Both WD and Seagate have user forums.

          its installed in a pc
Sorry for late reply its the only hard drive in machine.hard drive no. is
          wd800jb-00jjc0.
it was all working ok yesterday.
I have put a new ide hard drive in pc and that's ok set as master.
have also tried it with cable select
I put this wd hard drive in different pc and get the same problem but it will let me select it as a slave drive and I can read all data on it then.

          Very odd problem

            This is installation guide. http://www.wdc.com/en/library/eide/2779-001001.pdf

In the manual says: "Single - Installing the new drive as the only drive in the system:
If installing your new Western Digital hard drive as the only IDE device on the cable, no
            jumper shunt is necessary".
