Because M$= Just started after Vista release. Maybe hidden in an update? It does it sometimes when you search in IE, also.

            Do you know hijackthis?
            Maybe that will do it.
This utility generates a list of different startup items, ActiveX items etc allowing you to remove unwanted items.

Re: windows live popup in explorer

I wonder if it could be controlled by (found by doing search in help on computer):

Stop receiving pop-up ads that have the title Messenger ServiceIf advertisements open on your computer in a window titled Messenger Service, your system might not be secure. Although the name is similar, these messages—which are sometimes called "messenger spam"—are not related to Windows Messenger, MSN Messenger, or other instant messaging programs.

Disabling instant messaging programs is not necessary and will not prevent Messenger service spam. To help protect your computer, you should enable Windows Firewall (or a firewall of your choice) and also make sure that the Messenger service feature in Windows XP is disabled.

To disable the Messenger service feature in Windows XP

You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings might also prevent you from completing this procedure.

                Open Services in Administrative Tools.
                Double-click Messenger.
In the Services list, double-click Messenger.
In the Startup type list, click Disabled.
Click Stop, and then click OK.
                Note

If your computer is part of a corporate network, talk to your system administrator before taking this action.

Re: windows live popup in explorer

Methink that this is something different, its something like MS passport, something to make your system unic and identifiable, probably the small brother of TCPA. In Viesta this is probably already included w/o people realize it or i am wrong there?
I have not installed a single Viesta yet, and personally i have no urgent wish to do it.
But the sooner or later i have to bit the bullet.

Last post for today.....honestly. Did you download the Windows Live Messenger, http://get.live.com/messenger/features ? Or maybe MS is pushing Windows Live Messenger on you (via messenger)?

Re: windows live popup in explorer

I have all my WinXP clients set to permanently block the installation of IE7. There is no compelling need for them to use it, other than a teaser for Vista. Those who insist on using it are encourage to call Microsoft for support, and not me. IE7 broke many versions of Quickbooks when it was released, and other stuff also.

I also tell my clients who go to Vista before SP1 is released, to call Microsoft for help. I cannot give it. This progression is 100% identical to all previous MS versions. Wait 6 months, or until SP1 is released. Let somebody else die on the bleeding edge of technology.

Steve Jobs is laughing at Vista... says none of the Apple software is compatible with it. Quicktime, iPod, etc, etc. Dell is now forcing all new machines to have Vista when purchased. I've advised my clients to not buy any new hardware with Vista until August, or SP1 is released.

some sites which we needed to see for the company are now ok in firefox, previously they werent. so i think its probably ok to make the IE icons point to firefox now. still although IE7 gets bashed a lot, all is not completely rosy on the mozilla site. both firefox and thunderbird make memory leaks which can get quite large. firefox also makes very large print jobs out of some web pages.

Re: windows live popup in explorer

Go back to V 4.7 of Messenger. I don't have the problem at home, just at work. I use IE 7 on my family XP at home and at work. I install all the updates at home. It must be XP Pro/ Messenger 7 related.

ps I use Messenger/.Net Passport thingy at Microsoft for MSDN, so 4.7 works for them, and no windows " Live"

If you never use windows messenger you can remove it with the following command.
Start - run - enter the following command without quotes.

                                      "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove"

It can be simply reinstalled with windows update.
However i don't think this is the cause of this annoying popup.

Maybe you can disable it with something like Manage Addons under "Extra" in internet explorer, I don't exactly know how it's named in english.
