    Dell Poweredge 2400

So my local college has a surplus sale about 3 times a month for half the year. Today, I went there during my lunch break and poked around at the old computer stuff. I was really hoping to score a nice 486 system to install Windows 3.11 on, but all there was were gutted P4 Optiplex's and powermac G3 's.

Shame. But I continued to poke around a bit more and found this beast. They have a no-opening policy to prevent people from pocketing ram when no ones looking, so I just picked it up, yup, fells heavy, both power supplies are there, and for $10 I could get that back in the amount of scrap metal in the thing. Get it home and apart. Its got a SL4BS P3 1GHz in it, 512MB of ECC Registered PC133, a couple of network cards, and a SCSI controller. No hard drives though, and missing the caddys to hold them. So I was thinking of a few things to do with it -

Get some caddys online (they seem to go for about $6 a piece) and use it as a fileserver

    or

I have a MB/CPU/RAM combo from a different poweredge server that I believe will transplant in. The motherboard has the same funky formfactor, but this board has two 1GHz Xeon P3's with 2GB of ram. May require some creative-ness to get the power supplies to work though.

    or

Casemod it for ATX and use it as a computer case.

You could add another PIII into the existing server as far as I can tell - specs I've found say it supports a pair, you likely will need a second VRM module though (every Dell I've worked on has them as plug in modules)

Max ram on the 2400 is 2GB (PC133 ECC)

I have a 2600 (dual S604 Xeons) as a fileserver here and I'm looking to fill the 4 spare bays in it when time and money allows - I have some 80-pin SCSI drives but they're full height so won't physically fit in the hotswap bays.

Hey just so you know, I have four 1GB sticks of REG ECC PC133 sticks, and some Tualatin-S P3's (1.4GHz) if you are interested I haven't touched them in years. And you should add pics

Is anyone actually familiar with the supported CPU's on these boards? I have one that has a 550 in it, I believe--haven't touched it, yet. But I read others trying to put in a single 933 and having no luck making it come up. Some info says it will only run 133MHz FSB if the CPU is a 256k L2 cache, while 512k will only run at 100MHz. Regardless, can this thing push dual 1GHz? (I'm not really interested in going through the hassle of doing converters to run dual Tualatins, even if it's possible in this case.)

Microprocessor type: one or two Intel Pentium III microprocessors with an internal operating frequency of at least 500 MHz and an external operating frequency of 100 or 133 MHz

Internal cache: 32-KB L1 cache; 256- or 512-KB L2 cache (512 KB L2 cache only in 100 MHz FSB processors)

^ That means PIII Katmai (512KB L2) or PIII Coppermine (256KB L2), which were made up to 1.0GHz for Slot-1. Any of these should run OK after a BIOS update.

To run Coppermines above 1.0GHz (s370) a decent slotket would be needed, and to run Tualatins extra tinkering with CPU pins and slotket connectors.

I have four slokets sitting on a shelf, new in box (opened a couple to inspect). Three are MSI, one is ASUS. If you want some to use/mod, let me know, they were freebies that ever since my AMI meagaDUAL took a dump I never had a use for.

The best, bug-free slotkets are those which have a TVC15222 or TVC16222 voltage clamp chip.

Add polymers and that should probably be about /slotket, if you know what I mean.

Dell E6400 PT434 type Battery Charging Stuck at 1%. Battery Pinouts?
                  by Bowline
My question pertains to understanding the control circuity inside a Dell PT434 type battery used in Dell E6400, E6410 and other Dell notebooks?

Does anyone have a circuit diagram for the inside of a Dell PT434 battery and/or a description of how the control lines work to control this battery?

My reason for asking is I have a battery which I cannot get to charge beyond 1% in a Dell E6410 or E6400.
The LED bar graph charge indicator on the battery shows one LED lighted when the info button is pressed.
I have tried multiple different Dell power adapters. My Dell...

Request: Dell PowerEdge R340 iDRAC9 SPI dump (Winbond 25Q032)
                  by maximus-bullitt
                  Hi everyone,

I’m working on a Dell PowerEdge R340 (Service Tag: JTMLKB2).
The iDRAC is bricked — system hangs at “iDRAC initializing,” fans at 100%, and no VGA output.
The cause is a bad firmware flash to the iDRAC SPI.

                  Board details:
                  - Model: Dell PowerEdge R340 (14G)
                  - iDRAC version: iDRAC9
                  - Flash chip: Winbond 25Q032 (32 Mbit / 4 MB)
                  - Location: iDRAC EEPROM near the BMC (ASPEED AST chip)
                  - Tool used: CH341A programmer

                  What I need:
                  - A clean, working 4 MB `.bin` dump of the 25Q032 from another R340...

Dell Pro 13 Plus PB13250 Bios Unlock
                  by Akhlz001
                  Hi,

Could someone help trying to unlock this BIOS, seems that Dell have changed the layout of new Dell Pro 8FC8 bioses from checking HXD - 4000 bits do not need changing, only 2000. However after FF the section starting from '01000' upto 2000 bits and then soldering the chip back it seems that the microchip on the motherboard is recovering the bios back to original settings after first boot. Has anyone found a way to crack this extra layer of security Dell have implemented? Seems both HP and Dell have upped bios security to match Lenovo by implementing extra measures on a separate...

                  by master3112
I would like to share my experience about charging issues with Dell power supplies with the tech community. I am working on a Dell Inspiron 5590, Mainboard 18778-1 with charging problems. The device can be switched on and works so far, only the message appears at startup:

Alert! The AC power adapter wattage and Type cannot be determined. The battery may not change. The System will adjust the performace to match the power available.

The power supply unit is not recognized in the Bios and the charging process is set to "idle". I use original Dell battery, type...
