    It did it again!

For the second time in less than six months I have had a server drive overheat and crash!
This time it was in a far newer system (pentium pro era) and was located on a removable drive caddy which has it's own fan! I can rule out high voltage problems and poor ventilation and luckily this time around I was prepared with a backup of the drive taken two days ago.
I am jooking at just plain old wear and tear taking it's toll but for some reason, all my scsi drives (seagate on ultra wide scsi) run rather hot.

    Re: It did it again!

I was looking online at the specs for a Fujistu drive I bought, and it recommended replacement after 5 years! 3 of the years are already gone(used). 5years old is like brand new to me.

      Re: It did it again!

depends what the caddy is. some of those plastic ones with a small fan are crap for ventilation. the multiple ones with the 80mm fans are best.

i am starting to believe more in heat and also power issues in failure of hdds but there can be other mechanical factors also. yeh they like to go one after the other, especially if you look at them wrong.......and i have never received a useful smart warning before failure, they just crap out without any warning or noise these days.

i follow that guideline. you will never see a warranty longer than that. if they are 15.000 rpm scsi then what can you expect. TC should have some info about fujitsu scsi longevity.

for office stuff though. where is the economy? every hour the computer is out of action is costing the price of a new hdd. takes me over a day to do a rebuild these days, the configuration has become so complicated and is changing from month to month and yeh we dont have all same comps to do convenient ghost.

Its 10,000rpm, but if it were mission critical, I would spend the money on new ones and replace them at the end of their warranty period.

            Re: It did it again!

Well there are four removable drives, all from ebay and all with 80mm fans.
The drives came from a Government surplus where they had chopped up a server far bigger than what topcat has and sold off parts to the highest bidder.
The server itself is running through a regulator/conditioner and has more fans that of a pig barn. My only flaw is that I have reused old full-height AT cases. The drives sit in their own case and connect via scsi to a controller in the main case.
I don't even want to think of replacing my drives every few years. I only built this server as a place to make file storage easier no matter what computer I am at and so I could ftp my files when I am at school.

              SCSI controller problem
              by douglasfir
Hi there! I have an Adaptec 2940w/uw 50/68 pin controller card in an old machine I'm trying to set up, and i'm having a problem getting the drive to even spin up when it connected to the controller. The drive will spin up with the cable connected to it and not the controller. But not when it's connected to the controller. The drive is a seagate st336607lw u320 10k RPM. The cable is an SE/LVD 68 pin with a terminator on one end. Scsi controller is set to defaults. I have enabled termination power with the jumpers on the drive itself. The drive is connected to the last connector before the terminator...

HannStar Hanns-G HC194d LCD monitor repair
              by momaka
Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

Power supply board from a ventilation unit - burnt out something
              by cjard
This vent axia ventilation unit stopped working and I pulled the power supply board hoping it was the internal fuse. Seems this other component might be to blame but what is it? It looks like a capacitor to me but next to it on the board is printed RV1 whereas a physically similar component at the other side of the board is labelled C15...

              Any ideas guys?...

Dell Inspiron 1545 08212-1 - NO HDD DETECT
              by mantza
Hello, they brought me this laptop, it had the hdd changed for an ssd and after some time it stopped working. There is power voltages on the connector and if i put an hdd it spins, but there is no voltage on the data pins and its not detected at all on bios. I can install windows on the ssd on a caddy in place of the dvd drive but if i shutdown it will not boot, it says no hdd found. Only if i use hirens boot from hard drive it will see the hdd in the caddy and boot normally.
So is there a way to troubleshoot this? And if not is there a way to boot from the caddy by default? A bypass on...

              SCSI Termination
              by bigbeark
Any SCSI experts here? I am using an ASUS CUR-DLS with onboard LSI SCSI and Ubuntu Linux. I was using a Seagate Cheetah ST##^&52LC Drive until it got too hot. I am now using an IBM drive whih I am pretty sure is a quantum/maxtor - cool running but not as quiet as the Seagate. Ubuntu Logs shows:

              6.518136] scsi target3:0:0: FAST-80 WIDE SCSI 160.0 MB/s DT (12.5 ns, offset 62)
