    RAM discrepancy

I've installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on my 2006 Mac Pro.
    I have 6GB of RAM installed: 4x 512MB and 4x 1GB, FB-DIMMs.
CPU-Z agrees with me. However, Windows 7 only reports 4.00GB of RAM. What is going on!

PS: No bootcamp or any of that BS. It's running natively...

PS2: Why is my sound volume so LOOOOW

I don't have much knowledge with Macs but maybe it only supports up to 4GB? And 8 RAM slots in a laptop? Impressive...

I too want to see a laptop with EIGHT ram slots...I think he's referring to a mac pro, not a macbook.

windows running natively on a mac?!

issues are probably both driver problems.

        Re: RAM discrepancy

        OK an update:
I google'd how the mac pro allocates ranks of memory in this version...
because there are two memory riser cards, apparently slots 1 on riser and slots 1 on b are the first ranks, slot 2 on a and slot 2 on b is the next rank, etc.
So I've changed the configuration to:
        2x1GB in rank 1, 2x1GB in rank 2, 2x1GB in rank 3, 2x 512mb in rank 4.
Why? because even though I have 8 1gb sticks 1 i think is bad...

After Windows Update is done we'll see if that fixed it...

I don't know what's going on with the RAM, but the sound issue is more than likely driver related.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

HAHAHA that would be awesome. 4x HDD bays while we're at it would be nice too...

It's a very nice computer but Mac OS is 100% a piece of shit! Linux is 75% a piece of shit.
So Windows (10% shit) it is!!

OK so that didn't work either... it said 6GB. So I assumed it wsan't detecting the 2 512MB sticks. So I took them out. Then it said 4GB. WTF???
So I've put all 8 1GB sticks in, and this time there is no little red light telling me 1 is causing issues so I hope it's working at full 8GB.
4GB just isn't enough: Windows Update was taking 1.4GB and Waterfox took another 1GB lol...

                YAY 8GB!!!! WOOHOO!!!! LOL!!!
Now I just need the 16GB of RAM I ordered for my Lenovo laptop to come and we're all set...
then I just need a HDMI-DVI adapter for a 3rd LCD to connect to it and everything will be just the way I want it!

                  Re: RAM discrepancy

Here is how I solved my overheating issue.
To recap (pun unintended), I have 6x512mb sticks with good apple heatsinks, and 8x1gb sticks with slim useless heatsinks
I decided that 6GB of RAM is enough, and spent about 1.5hrs swapping the heatsinks.
All is good now it works perfect, with 6GB of RAM!

I still think whoever decided the hot air from the CPUs should pass over hot-running FB-DIMMs is a retard!

Bootcamp does not recognise External monitor
                        by wkholi
                        Hi All

i have a mac without a display (it broke) and I am using an external monitor.

I installed win 10 using Bootcamp.

I could not boot into windows, I get the win logo for a couple of seconds and then no display.

I could log into OSX with the same display.

I guess the external display driver was not. installed while downloading win files.

Any ideas on how to fix that?

Macbook 2017 with touchbar (A1706) won't turn on after removing the screen
                        by Ryan.man
Hello everybody! Posting this in hopes somebody has some expertise that leads to a clear path of troubleshooting that saves me a lot of time!

My macbook has the flex cable problem, the one that prevents the screen turning on. Ive been dealing with this for the last 3 years. Last year it went dead and I managed to fix it following youtube tutorials. But my fix wasnt the best, the problem returned a month later. This week, it went dead again. I again tried to fix it.

This time the original cable broke too close to the screen, it can't be fixed without tearing the screen...

Do built-in Apps shorten the lifespan of Smart TVs?
                        by KYBOSH
I was chatting with a TV repair shop today and the owner mentioned this but would really go into detail so i wanted to ask you guys what you thought.

He warned that a Smart TV will last longer if you use an external device to run programs (like Netflix) rather than running it natively on the TV.

Is there any truth to this and if so can someone explain the rationale? Or perhaps cite a source where I can readup on it? I havent seen anything yet.
                        Thank you!

A1707 820-00928-04 missing component, boardview mismatch
                        by luiztessadri
I have a board that has a component missing but the 820-00928 boardview doesn't have this component. I know it's not a capacitor because both sides are not GND. The board has no sound only boot chime. I already changed MacOS version with full clean install with USB flash. Replaced U6200 and U6300 but still the same. I cleared EFI firmware with Intel FIT but problem persists. All power rails and signal are good. Resistance values of all resistor involved in the circuit are correct. Diode mode shows no discrepancy comparing to OpenBoardView Data. At output or input devices nothing shows. At System...

                        Mac A1707 Odd display behaviour
                        by scrubey
                        Hello all,

Wanted to know if anyone here had seen display behaviour similar to this:

I dropped my A1707 and smashed the screen. I replaced it with a very good condition used screen from eBay.

Everything about the screen works perfectly, except before the OS has booted.
The screen fails to display until the MacOS slider which occurs during boot is roughly halfway, meaning if I try to access the boot menu using alt/option, I don't see anything on the display. I also don't see anything in bootcamp, or if I try to access any of the recovery modes...
