    She straight up froze.....

Last night I was derping around on my PC, browsing the internet as usual.

    Gigabyte EP45-UD3P
    Core 2 Duo E7500
    XFX Radeon HD 4850
    640GB Caviar Black
    4GB G.Skill DDR2
    400w Delta DPS-400RB
Antec Solo case with great ventilation

This is my main PC. My broke college ass only has this and my laptop, so I care deeply about this computer's well-being.

She has never, ever, let me repeat, EVER given me ANY trouble. She has always been rock solid and fast, just as you would expect from any Gigabyte-based system.

But last night she straight up froze on me. The cursor stopped moving, the Numlock key stopped responding. I waited a few minutes but she was gone, so I rebooted.

There was nothing in the event log, and HD tune shows nothing suspicious except for a CRC error count of 18. Nothing else to indicate my Caviar Black is having any sort of trouble.

I don't know what to make of this, because this computer has been extremely stable until last night. Not just that, but I have never had a Windows PC ever just straight up freeze on me like that without at least an event log entry. Was it a freak occurrence or could something be wrong with my lovely?

    Re: She straight up froze.....

I had random freezing with one of my systems, which in all other respects was OK except a cheapish PSU.

I replaced the PSU with a Corsair and freezing stopped - for about a month, then it happened again.

Then one day I noticed I could get it to freeze by touching the VGA cable.

Reseated the video card and haven't had the issue since.

I think you just need to wait and see what happens, if it happens again, then you know there's certainly something going on.

CRC Errors on HDD generally indicate a crappy\loose data and\or power cable, but could also be indicative of a deeper problem, of course.

Check to make everything is seated properly all cables are tightly plugged in. One of my old systems had some problems like that and it turned out to be a wifi card that had worked its way loose and was no longer seated properly.

Also while 400w is enough, it is a little on the low side for that system. I've never seen a Delta that can't deliver its rating but all PSUs deteriorate over time as the Capacitors age so if it is a few years old it may be running near capacity when the system is at 100% load and have difficulty handling that.

the OP stated he was "browsing the internet like usual" so I doubt the system was at 100% load.
However, if it happens again, try a different power supply.

          its not the PSU

his rig has a 400W delta in it... you know, the $40 ex-gateway ones from hypermicro?

          ---

my advice is to go back to using and try to replicate the issue... sometimes freak things happen once and never happen again... if it happens twice, then there probably is an issue.

Just putting it in as a possibility if future problems arise. The first suggestion of loose card/connector is far more likely under a light load like that. Could just be a software related random freeze too. not as common on newer OSs but can still happen occasionally, although it's very rear for even the keyboard to stop responding, I've seen it happen once or twice.

Have a look inside the PSU.
"We have offered them (the Arabs) a sensible way for so many years. But no, they wanted to fight. Fine! We gave them technology, the latest, the kind even Vietnam didn't have. They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."
