    KVM switch modification

I've got an old 4-port Belkin unit...
works fine, except I want to be able to uplug the (PS2) keyboard and mouse, and (VGA) monitor, while maintaining connection to the computers and not having to restart them.

I've never seen a KVM that wouldn't let you do that
36 Monitors, 3 TVs, 4 Laptops, 1 motherboard, 1 Printer, 1 iMac, 2 hard drive docks and one IP Phone repaired so far....

Are you saying that pulling the keyboard is generating a spontaneous reboot or is the keyboard no longer recognized when plugging it back in?

the only way around that is a KVM that simulates the perifs (ie, 'dummy loads') to the PC. I'm sure your Belkin doesn't. KVM's that do are rather pricey.

I think I have an old 8 port autoview commander laying around somewhere that would do it.....I got it just for the reason you needed.

Don't forget to recap it if you find one on fleabay!

can my existing KVM cables work with it?

                No, the cables are proprietary.

                  Well fuck that sucks
Screw this, I'll just not have keyboard, mouse, monitor on my server ,and use RDC (Windows Server 2008) or SSH (Ubuntu Server)...

                    Re: KVM switch modification

I've used a lot of KVMs in my career. Never seen one that didn't fake a keyboard/mouse/monitor to the computer at all times.

That said, of all the brands I've used only one didn't give trouble. Switchview/Avocent the only brand I'd recommend. Ditto for UPSes, APC or nothing. I've seen a lot of other brands fail with various problems, including one particular Tripplite model that used to catch fire. I've been in I.T. for over 25 years, so I've developed a few opinions

                      Re: KVM switch modification

Um... are we sure about that? Because my Belkin unit doesn't then again it's an old OmniView series 4-port with "Win2K" support. Lol! even though I don't see why it should matter given that it's a simple KVM switch...
Maybe it just has to do with the fact that Belkin makes cheap shit?

                          Re: KVM switch modification

All the cheapo PS2 KVMs I've used provide a simulated keyboard mouse and monitor to powered but inactive ports because too many motherboards couldn't handle reconnecting mice and keyboards and video cards want to change resolutions when the monitor disappears.

I've got a DKVM-4K to get rid of. I'm all USB now. The early USB KVM were horrible, unreliable and with more than 6 second switch delay. Now that KVM makers have discovered that USB KVM can be their own dual personality HID/Keyboard device the support is much better.

Me too. Never had problems with PS2 types. Even Belkin.
That said, I have several types which I tested on receipt [to make sure they work] but I don't use them a heck of a lot.....
On some I could have easily missed something that creeps in over time or is mobo/OS dependent.
