    The one in my recording is a Excelstor Ganymede J680 (Hitachi OEM). They're probably mostly identical to the Hitachi lineup from the same timeframe.

    @seanc: wow.. load cycle count at 375567 But laptop drives seem to be more tolerant to this than desktop ones

      I believe they started putting the 'Sudden Motion Sensor' into these MacBook Pro's which park the head if they detect sudden movement such as a drop.
      Either it's overly sensitive or possibly the drive has its own sensor and they don't get on well together. It's been working fine for 2 years. I RMA'd the first one because it developed 1 bad sector after a few months and I wasn't going to put up with that on a new drive.
