Re: getting quote together for rack build

There are no changes from EPS 2.91 to EPS 2.92 that affect connectors unless the PSU has Five +12v rails.

    EA650 is EPS 2.91 compliant.
    http://store.antec.com/Product/power...5-27650-4.aspx

And a review that clearly show the connectors.

Re: getting quote together for rack build

I have finally got the Dell tower case, Optiplex 780 motherboard, E6700 (dual pentium 2.93GHz 1066fsb), 4GB ram (2x2GB). Rest of other parts I use mine. Planning to put together these tomorrow and transfer data.

Cost is not that bad. Case 30 dollars but it got all the goodies (wires, PSU etc) and Dell heatsink for another 15 (from same mailorder store) 2.93GHz CPU was about 79 , 4GB ram Mushkin was about 45, both local store. Motherboard was about 45 plus shipping and was packed well with 775 socket protector and bagged in antistatic bag.

This is to replace aging Dimension 8300 with P4 2.8C HT, 2GB (recapped several years ago, and reliable BTW.)

      Cheers, Wizard

what I ment was it just dosen't have the 4 & 8. the pics on newegg show a 4+4 only. Maybe they revised it? if this is a simple linux fileserver & pbx i'm getting half tempted to just get a normal motherboard. I was trying to get something with ECC and high quality. and yes I know ecc is usually a feature I would not need for something this low of usage (simple file server and 6-phone pbx)

Well, as I already pointed out....

The ones I have here have the 4+8...
The one in the review has the 4+8.
Antec's product page says it's EPS 2.91 compliant which means it has the 4+8.

That's 3 to 1 against what newegg's crappy picture of the connectors show.

But you can take what you see in newegg's picture over what two people have observed [myself and that reviewer] and the manufacturer's product information says if you want.

Re: getting quote together for rack build

well I think I may have discovered a cheap way of doing this.

the link you gave me bonez for the dual sossman board has no io shield. and even yes thats not required, it does bug me

when you add the cost of the fully buffered dimms, and the heatsinks, it adds up

            but here

            http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131654

is an am3 board that supports ddr3 UNREG/UNBUFF ECC

100% poly caps, with a Athlon II x2 chip (which has naitive ECC support)

take the hard drive controller down to legacy and use linux raid. this might not be such a bad idea when paired with a earthwatts psu

it almost feels like that dual xeon board is too much for what they need

Re: getting quote together for rack build

Just because two CPU sockets are there doesn't mean you have to use two CPU's.
A single 5148 is equivalent to a C2D E6550 so it's less CPU than your original E8400 plan.

Your going cheaper on RAM [or you think you are] but how does that CPU compare to $18.50 for a 5148?
              http://cgi.ebay.com/180666449825

Stock Intel coolers can be had cheap and are more than adequate for a 40 watt CPU.
              http://cgi.ebay.com/150587974587
I actually got a box of 6 new ones for $6.50 each a couple months ago.
[ They go cheap sometimes because some bare-bones servers come with a heat-sink/fan and so does the retail CPU. They end up with two coolers. ]

As I pointed out in an earlier link FB RAM can be had for $17.50/GB.

You probably already know what I think of Asus. - LOL

Re: getting quote together for rack build

yeah but this is a newer full poly asus and has good reviews. Asus's old days of kgz's and nvidia chips are pretty much over...

                  but yeah you're right.

                  i'm thinking

                  http://cgi.ebay.com/INTEL-SE7520BB2-...item3f033ac4ee

and 4 of those 2ghz sossmans. if they're only $9 then why not double up

i'm only concerned about the lack of slots, but built in sata ports

most of the 771 boards on ebay are hp, dell, or are insanely expensive

i'll go for one of those I know has an I/O shield, I can get that board new for ~$40-50

wait a minute, this board only support. ddr2 400 registered dimms? I thought it was the fully buffered board, hmm those are cheaper (not the fb dimms, the 400 regs are cheaper)

hey, whats the single rank and dual rank stuff?

I mentioned they use regular DDR2 Registered earlier.

Remember I suggested that board specifically for a 'dumb' file server.

I also mentioned they are 32-bit OS only. - Dunno if that matters.

they mostly just need a quickbooks fileserver (still messing around /w the quickbooks linux package)

the other one will be an elastix pbx, i've already been messing around with it and I like it so far, more updated then trixbox ce

I dunno how much CPU those programs need.

Sossamans are Yonah cores w/2Mb cache & 667FSB.
The 2GHz [the common one] is about equivalent to a T2500 Laptop C2D.

If those programs are basic office work type programs a pair would certainly handle it.
                            - But use the 4GB RAM plan, it's a multiple user situation and each user needs enough RAM to do their work.

question for some of you linux gurus out there

recently i've been playing with quickbooks server manager on a testserver. Of course this is only available as an RPM. I ran alien and converted it all to deb and installed it and the qb diagnostic saw the port just fine, let me open the file, let me run everything perfectly

after using it a while, quickbooks started to give me an error when I tried to open up the company, and checked and it reads the QBW as 3.1TB, and the HDD is 8gb (pentium III, 384M, running Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS). I booted to livecd and ran fsck -a -f and it dosen't give me any serious errors. says someting about 0.1% non-contiguous files, but dosen't say anything about any other kind of errors in the filesystem

now, I DID install this with EXT4, should I of just stuck with 3?

                                Steps i done and results:

I exported a clean bios from update file via pfs extract.

                                1. Build clean bios with clean ME, PMC, PCH in flash image tool.
                                Result: Dead

                                2. Build clean bios with no changes in ME, new PMC, PCH
                                Result: Dead

                                3. Build old bios with clean ME, new PMC, PCH
                                Result: The same

How to build this little device please for my campervan security
                                by iotaa
                                Hi,

You will probably find this funny, and it is, but it's also a project I'd like to take seriously.
I have a campervan and I'd like to avoid thieves to break in it when I am inside it or not.
For this purpose I imagined a simple device that can play a sound based on a vibration detection (in case of intrusion attempt) or by pushing a button manually.

The sound wil be a growling dog, which will deter any thief, thinking there is a big dog inside the van
This sound can be manually triggered by me if I'm inside the van, or played automatically...
