To SLI or not to SLI...

Building my boys budget game system
So far____ about a $100 worth...
    Motherboard:
    CPU Type DualCore AMD Opteron 165 1800 MHz (9 x 200) 939
    Motherboard Name Abit AN8 / Fatal1ty AN8 Series
Motherboard Chipset nVIDIA nForce4, AMD Hammer
System Memory 2048 MB (DDR SDRAM)
    BIOS Type Award (04/16/07)

More Ram be nice I guess but with this system will it run two say 128 SLI video or is one enough at 512? And what advantage the SLI on this older system? (My God, 2006 older?)
I get sleepy reading about frame rates rasts etc

    939 DualCore AMD Opteron, 1800 MHz (9 x 200)
    Abit AN8 / Fatal1ty AN8 SLI Series
    3072 MB (PC3200 DDR SDRAM)
ATI Radeon HD 4300/4500 Series (1024 MB
    Lian LI Aluminium mesh case

First of all, watch that NF4, they run HOT and like to die in a slow and painful way (crashes, crashes and more crashes). Point a fan at the chipset.

Depends what video cards you're thinking of. But i'd say that either a 8800GT 512MB or HD3870 512MB should complement that system nicely. A lot of people still swear by the 8800GT, while i've been using the 3870 for the past 2 years and i'm satisfied with it.

Must be one noisy little mofo at 5k rpm.

you want to regularly check that or replace it with a big passive sink, most mobo fans are sleeve bearing chip murderers that fail without being noticed.
they rarely have a tacho output either!

You have to be deaf not to notice that a 5000 rpm whizzer just went quiet.

I could never get two mid-range cards to run better than a single high-end card.
              Ludicrous gibs!

Looks like a 9600GT, the name swap nVidia did with the 9 series tends to be confusing. At any rate it's not the best, but not bad. Should handle anything at medium-high.
