Re: whats better a 3.4 ghz cpu or a 3.8?
for sure the 3.4 with 2mb cache. but why p4s? and is it pentium d-core, northwood, or prescott? actually i'm sure its probably prescott, so why prescott? you can probably get an athlon64 or something similar for really cheap and it will be faster.Comment

Re: whats better a 3.4 ghz cpu or a 3.8?
3.4 with 2mb cache. And this can't be a 478.. The only 478s with 2mb cache that I'm aware of were the Extreme Editions. What he probably has is an LGA775 Pentium D.Comment

I'll always go with more cache.

Re: whats better a 3.4 ghz cpu or a 3.8?
Not to be an ass but what is there to like about the P4?
I give you a challenge; find a reputable review where a Core 2 Duo with any stock clockspeed is beaten by a stock Pentium 4
Sure it can be done but A Pentium 3 1Ghz is faster than a Pentium 4 in many tests
Pentium 3 Tualatin 1.4Ghz can beat the P4 in tests where the P4 approaches 2Ghz
The AMD Athlon64 processors eats the P4's for lunch
And the Core 2 Duo processors eat the Athlon64's for lunch
And you say you have a S775 mobo?

Re: whats better a 3.4 ghz cpu or a 3.8?
They are both socket 775 I am sure. You cant get anything faster than a 3.4 in socket 478 and the 2 meg lvl 3 cache of that chip is a Gallation core which is kinda rare now.
As to which is faster it depends on what you are using it for.
If its cpu clock speed intensive software (like say EverQuest II) the 3.8 will smoke the 3.4.
Are they single core? are they Hyper Threading? are they 32 or 64 bit? are they dual core? are you going to overclock?
Model or S-spec #'s of the 2 chips you are comparing along with the intended use would help to provide you with the answer you seek. :PLast edited by brethin; 08-27-2010, 01:43 PM.Comment

I have a 3.6 64 bit hyperthreading socket 775 P4 with 1 meg cache in one machine and a 3.4 64 dual core Pentium D 2x2 meg cache in another, other than that they are exactlly the same in all hardware and the 3.6 beats the 3.4 in some apps and the 3.4 beats the 3.6 in others.Comment

D915PCY
the CPU it came with Intel® Celeron® D 331 SL7TV only 2.66 GHz 533 MHz 256 KB
and from the looks of it it wont take a duel core or a pentium d so pentium 4 it is.Last edited by Phaihn; 08-27-2010, 02:33 PM.My Computer.

Re: whats better a 3.4 ghz cpu or a 3.8?
LGA775 Pentium D is not Pentium 4 at all IIRC but Dothan. Oddly enough, the 865 chipset can take both Pentium 4 (Netburst) chips and Dothan-based chips (Core Duo, etc...). I've seen a motherboard with an 865 that had a socket 775.Comment

Re: whats better a 3.4 ghz cpu or a 3.8?
Unfortunately, Pentium D isn't Dothan at all. =P
Dothan came after Banias (both Pentium M, mainly mobile but some desktop use) which actually was derived from--you guessed it--the P3. Namely, the cool running Tualatins.
The spec sheet for Pentium D is here:
It's Netburst! As Per Hansson and others have stated, P4/Netburst stuff isn't really economical anymore. Sure, one core may be fast, but almost any competing CPU architecture a generation newer OR older than it will be far more efficient. If you don't pay the electric bill, it might not matter to you as much...Comment
