• Bad KZGs on NEW Intel D850MD / D850EMD2

    Haven't had too many cap repairs lately, but thought I would show you guys this one;

2 motherboards, "new" from a seller on eBay. Both have two KZGs near the CPU; both bad on the first example, but on the other only one KZG is bulged.

Interestingly, both static bags have been taped twice, so they have been opened (seller says he updated them all to the latest BIOS), but show no signs of actual use. I've heard of new bad caps in existence (especially on NOS stuff, and these boards are likely 2002-2003) but never seen them first-hand before.

  • Re: Compaq Evo 1.7 GHz - a nice project?

Agreed--the VIA VT6421 is junk. Expect it to only be compatible with SATA-150 drives, and nothing over 500GB.

It even balks at SATA-300 drives jumpered to legacy mode. If the controller doesn't like your drive (and there's a good chance it won't), expect sub 1MB/s transfer rates.

    One word: noscript.

I used a 1Ghz coppermine P3 as my main box until 2008 (!!)... thanks to noscript and other awesome lightweight open-source software, I could still have hundreds...

  • Re: Power supply build quality pictorial. part 2

Most, if not all, of these PSUs should be working. Sooo... they belong in this thread, not the gutless PSU thread.

Basically, I've caught the "bad cap" bug--11 mobos, 3 PSUs, 3 LCD PSUs of mine, ALL with bad caps! 8 mobos, 1 PSU, and 2 LCD PSUs were a success so far, thankfully! I haven't attempted the remaining. Instead, I'm finding myself doing pre-emptive repairs on motherboards that I care about... so why not just do all the PSUs as well, if they're worth anything at least!

    The main purpose...

  • Re: the gutless, bloated, and fried power supply hall of shame

Anyone want to see the guts of these?

And maybe a Tagan ITZ 700W (1 of 4 that I'm willing to open, seen in blue box on left side of picture) and a monster DPS-750 (220v) out of an 8-way PIII Xeon server for dessert!...

The lone blue-colored one on the secondary side is actually a Rubycon, sorry I didn't clarify that in the first post. It's the only one I can't read the value of yet, will have a look tomorrow.

Yes, exactly like that. When you say full recap, are you recommending to replace the two 200v Rubys as well? Are both types of caps known to make a squealing sound?

I do see your point and agree though--I suppose after even 5 years on the shelf with no use, all of the above caps are probably...

  • Re: Fic k7s5a with bad caps

I have one of these K7S5A's as well, and surprisingly none of the caps are bulged and I haven't had stability issues. A few weeks ago, however, I had finished transporting the tower it was in back to my house, and plugged it in with my ear right next to the tower.

BAM! 300W AGI PSU blew up... but the ECS still works!

  • Re: Epox 8RGA+ Newbie's Greetings

Interesting that everyone is recommending high wattage irons. I'd like get a hotter guy eventually for "large part" removal.

I use a 40W Weller iron with the small temp-adjusting station. Tip is a very miniature Weller pointy tip, cap is usually free by "rocking" it back and forth 3-4 times. New here as well, wish I would have taken pictures so far before I found this board!

    Here's one:

    Seasonic SS-200GPX

Normally a fan of Seasonic, I recently picked up 4 of these for an extremely good price to replacing some aging PSUs in P3 units. They were sold as brand new, and appear to me as new old stock. Upon plugging them in however, I observed they all have an extremely high pitched squeal. There is no dedicated on/off rocker switch on the back, so the noise is constant even when the PC is off and the PSU is only delivering 5vsb.

    Think this would be primary...

  • Re: NEW recap video made and working

Great video indeed! I second Akaister's appreciation for not using boring audio!

I've always generally used the cheap pump method myself, so I look forward to the next video.

While I'm thinking of it, there ARE two similarities of Dothan chips and P4s that do often get confused, though.

    A) Dothans evolved into the Yonah core, which was used in Core Solo, Core Duo, Celeron, and Pentium Dual Core (not D). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yonah_%28microprocessor%29

Pentium Ds are simply two hot Netburst chips in one. This is a good read as well, as it basically dissuades anyone from buying a P4 after you make any logical comparisons

Unfortunately, Pentium D isn't Dothan at all. =P

Dothan came after Banias (both Pentium M, mainly mobile but some desktop use) which actually was derived from--you guessed it--the P3. Namely, the cool running Tualatins.

The spec sheet for Pentium D is here:

It's Netburst! As Per Hansson and others have stated, P4/Netburst stuff isn't really economical anymore. Sure, one core may be fast, but almost any competing CPU architecture a generation newer OR older than it will be far more efficient....
