    Bad Smell from New Monitor

Hi everyone, first of all thanks to the site owner(s)/admin(s) for an excellent resource on electronic components.

I have a brand new Samsung 2494SW now torn apart on my kitchen table that performs damn well with no obvious issues - other than a hot electrical component smell that gives me a righteous headache. It's not overpowering, but it's enough to make me want to return it, because apparently I'm quite sensitive to it. I've smelled the same odor coming from a prior Acer monitor that I returned (way more malodorous), and a couple CFLs. I can smell a faint odor similar to this in my philips tv and a samsung lcd at work if I put my nose right up to the vents.

So after taking it apart, I've sniffed out the components that stink. It's definitely strongest near the medium-large sized caps and the transformer. I see no visible signs of defect. No bulging, leaking, stains, or dry joints. The caps are Samwha brand, and from what I've gathered they're the WB model.

I guess I'm looking for guidance on the issue. Is it possible for caps to be bad and not show any signs other than odor? Any tips/insight would be tremendously appreciated.

not unusual for new electronics to outgas a while.
    like "new car smell".
if nothing is getting too hot i wold not worry about it.some pcb materals smell forever.have a panasonic rf-b600 sw reciever in the shop that has a distinctive phenolic pcb odor.its 30+ years old.

What kind of capacitors is that thing using?
"We have offered them (the Arabs) a sensible way for so many years. But no, they wanted to fight. Fine! We gave them technology, the latest, the kind even Vietnam didn't have. They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."

I remember the first time I used my Samsung color laser printer. It stunk up the whole house. After that, it was fine.

Yeah my Samsung Syncmaster 17" LCD I bought in 03 smelled like that too.

I agree it's new car smell it eventually faded to almost unnoticeable and then I guess a year or two later disappeared completely.

The components (mostly the heatsinks) are heating and natural convection is occurring (cool air is being drawn in at one vent and hot air is being expelled out the other) and the air is expelling that smell along with it.

I agree though there are some PCBs that stink for life. I don't think it's the components (they don't have enough surface area) probably the PCB material, silkscreen ink, or the clear solder mask.

A few cheap Chinese wall warts I opened had PCBs that stunk from a distance when opened like some type of salt solution almost as strong as ocean water to my nose.

If you really can't deal with it until it passes return it.

I'm sure the guys at the store will be giving you weird looks when you're sniffing the floor models though .

Elements of the past and the future combining to make something not quite as good as either.
