    Measuring capacitance

I've got an Epox 4G4A; the two large 4700μf caps are definitely bad (bulging, brown deposit); there's also a 2200μf which I'm uncertain about - there may a slight bulge. I can hold of a capacitance measuring tool; can I test the cap without removing it from the motherboard? If not, I may as well replace it anyway I guess.

Tell us the brand of the 2200uF caps, and we can tell you. If they're a known shoody brand, they're likely bad with the others. To answer the question though, yes you can check the capacitance with THIS.

Item is "Reference #MUL-3333". It's a crude tester, but will give you a general idea.

The suspect cap is GSC, as are all the other caps on the board. However most of them look perfect from visual inspection; it is just the two largest that are definitely bad, and this other one which I'd like to check.

      Thanks,

gonna cost more to check than replace it. If they are GSC they are gonna fail. Why not replace them all and be happy.

Help for Newbie on measuring capacitance
          by Flux_Cap
I need help with measuring capacitance on vintage paper in oil, paper in wax, or Mylar film capacitors. I am using these vintage capacitors on my guitars. There are many sellers on eBay that offer these. Guitars generally have a very low operational voltage values; we are talking millivolts at most over a frequency range which is probably the same as the frequency range for the human ear. Most of the eBay sellers that I get my capacitors from are using different types of meters then I use; such as the PEAK ESR 70 or some cheap capacitance or transistor meter they got on Amazon. These old capacitors...

Calculating ESR from tan delta -- tan delta's dependence on capacitance
          by Junkrepair
I'm finally recapping my Soyo K7VX6 motherboard (aka KT600 Dragon Ultra) and replacing Sacon SZ-series caps. The Sacon SZ datasheet provides a spec for tan delta, but not for ESR, while the candidate replacement caps are specified in terms of ESR.

I found this nice little description of the conversion:

          Calculating capacitor ESR from Tan(delta)
          https://forum.digikey.com/t/calculat...-from-tan/2633

It mentions that a general spec for tan delta has to be adjusted for the specific capacitance before plugging tan delta into the formula...

          M1 MacBook Pro 2021 A2485 - No backlight display
          by rcanpolat
          Hi all,

I recently got my hands on an M1 MacBook Pro (2021, A2485) that I suspect suffered some liquid damage. I have a hot air station and the basic tools to work on the board, but I’m new to SMD repair and would love some guidance before diving in.

Here’s what I’ve observed so far:
          • When I power it on, I hear the MacBook chime and, with a flashlight, I can see the Apple logo on the screen. However, it never completes the boot and eventually powers off. My plan is to try to get the display fully working first, then tackle the boot issue.

          Capacitance and voltage of tantalum?
          by Antonynl
I have a tantalum capacitors with indicators EB 21 that measures only 22pF. See attached picture.

Since this is a windmeter that is normally in a very high mast I would like to get the correct replacement capacitor.

Is there somebody that can tell me what the capacitance and voltage of this capacitor are?

I don't feel confident that I can figure this out myself after searching around

          Cheers!!
