a tip should not be damaged with normal electronic solder, only if someone is using a very agressive flux that shouldnt be used on pcb's
aluminium or stainless-steel solder comes to mind.

That is why I asked the question. Sometimes people just starting into electronics do not know the difference.

        60/40 rosin flux core.

I've got an old, cheap RS soldering pencil around here somewhere with a screw-in tip with a set-screw. Long ago I used a brass screw for a tip and filed the end to a pyramid tip. It worked great but it definitely pitted quickly using 60/40 rosin core solder. I had to file it down every once in a while.

FWIW, I just opened the wall-wart for this router, and none of the caps inside are bulged.

Have you measred capacitance/ESR? No visual signs still does not mean they are not long bad.

No, I haven't done that, as I do not have the means to. I know it is no guarantee they're not bad, but how likely is it that they failed without swelling? I thought that was relatively uncommon; is that wrong?

                  Thanks!

Not really, especially small caps usually dry out and increase ESR/decrease capacity to insane levels. I've seen 10uF cap having less than 0.1 uF and ESR more than 150 ohm.

Thought I was odd fabricating tips from copper since those Hakko tips are scarce in this crappy country am at.

                        Netgear JGS516PE Switch Fan Replacement
                        by shovenose
I got a free Netgear JGS516PE PoE switch and it works fine but the fan makes a grinding sound.

It uses a 12V 3 pin fan with a non standard pin out. So I took a Noctua fan and moved the wires around in the connector to make it work.

Unfortunately, the fan spins for just a couple seconds before it turns off and the Fan Fault LED comes on.

I think it's stupid they designed it to stop powering the fan when it detects a fault but I guess that's what they chose to do.

Instead of spending $30 on the correct replacement fan, does anyone have a clean...

technika tv, 32 inch, capacitor replacement question, useful advice needed
                        by rustinjust
I have a technika tv, 32 inch, around 10 years or so in age and last night when watching tv i heard a hissing sound and the next thing i saw smoke coming out the back of the tv, i instantly unplugged the tv. I took the back off tv to expose power board, then plugged in tv and saw smoke coming out of a capacitor, i will try and attach a photo below, see below for attachments of board and cap, and keep reading, maybe you can advise ?

The cap says on it: 105kj450mff4. This doesn't mean a lot to me as i'm an amateur when it comes to electronics, though i've undertaken some repairs such...

                        Hi there

I have a Winmate DD24-AX DC-DC power supply with a few bulging KZG caps I'd like to replace. I am having trouble sourcing these caps.

                        KZG 1000uF 10V
                        KZG 1000uF 16V

Can anyone suggest some suitable replacements which are not too costly?

                        Photos attached,

                        Thanks in advance,...

Unknown transformer : how to find a good replacement part ?
                        by the_rem
                        Hello guys,

I would like a quite old but still good 800 W ATX PSU to be repaired. The problem was an extremely heavy coil whine coming from the small secondary transfomer on the PCB.

I desoldered it hoping the references on the upper side would allow me to find a adequate replacement part. Sadly the written references drove me nowhere but to the manufacturer (I-MAG). I sent them a message like a bottle in the see asking them to send me a datasheet of the transformer. And... They responded ! I received a kind of datasheet (see attachment) but my competencies do not allow...

                        Capacitor Replacement: Advice Needed
                        by Uy181
So I have a couple motherboards I am recapping that I do not have capacitor replacements already in my used inventory. I am wondering which capacitors that are currently in production for 2022 that I can use to replace the following capacitors:

"SAM YOUNG" NXC series 6.3v 3300uf
                        "Nichicon" HM series 6.3v 1000uf
                        "Nichicon" HM series 6.3v 3300uf
                        "United Chemi-Con" KZG series 6.3v 820uf
                        "TK" ATWY series 6.3v 820uf

                        Thanks!
