Netgear JGS516PE Switch Fan Replacement

I got a free Netgear JGS516PE PoE switch and it works fine but the fan makes a grinding sound.

It uses a 12V 3 pin fan with a non standard pin out. So I took a Noctua fan and moved the wires around in the connector to make it work.

Unfortunately, the fan spins for just a couple seconds before it turns off and the Fan Fault LED comes on.

I think it's stupid they designed it to stop powering the fan when it detects a fault but I guess that's what they chose to do.

Instead of spending $30 on the correct replacement fan, does anyone have a clean solution to making the Noctua fan work?

For now I have put the old fan back and get to listen to the grinding noise.

the 3rd pin is a minefield - there are several options for it.
whats the part number on the old fan?

It seems your fan uses the 3rd wire for pwm, and the switch expects it to return rpm on that wire. Maybe try with a more "mundane" fan.

Or... you can carefully open it, cleaning, lubricating... the particles on magnet inside stator, you catch and absorb with sticky tape... use grease instead oil................. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STRnqIjvanU

3rd pin is not pwm,
it can be a tacho, or less usually it can be a "rotor lock" signal to indicate the blades have siezed or jammed.
i have got an AV amp that has this feature

Thanks, it seems I will cough up the $30 for the "correct" fan.

OK, so I ordered a "compatible" fan off eBay. Set me back $30. Interestingly they made it work, clearly the wires were soldered together, not the original connector or they buy them without the connector and put the connector on, IDK. But it worked without the fan fault LED coming on and stopping the fan, so that's a win.

Anyway this is the original fan that was making the grinding noise.
