    Recap question

    I was originally Solder Boy here on the forums now I'm Scavenger ( don't ask lol)

    Anyhooo after a long abscence from recapping motherboards, I decided to tackle a couple of boards yesterday... the first one had no video and I recapped it and it worked no problems... I thought great!,let's try another.

    The 2nd one is a ASRock GE Pro-M2, it's problem was that it would turn on but no video. It had 5 blown capacitors that were the small ones 6.3 Volt 1000uf caps. I replaced them with OST ones. Anyway turned it on, and voila I had video Then to my dismay the board shut off.

    Looking on the back of the board, I didn't see any obvious signs of the solder on the traces, which would be not hard to do because of the way this board was designed.

    I don't have an ESR meter to check the caps I used... I'm guessing the caps I used must be bad... would that be a correct assumption?

    Re: Recap question

    If they're OSTs and not brand new, there's quite a chance that they are.
    The fact that the old ones obviously were dead gives me the feeling that the other ones on the mainboard might be dead, too.
    Might as well be PSU related.

      ASUS P5GC-MX motherboard recap
      by momaka
      Here’s another motherboard that needed a full recap: an ASUS P5GC-MX.
      This one was gifted to me some years ago by user Pentium 4, along with a few other goodies. It actually came in working order with no bulging or leaking caps. However, I noted there were United Chemicon KZG caps everywhere on the motherboard. The CPU VRM output (CPU V_core) was the only exception: it had only 2x KZG. The rest was 6x UCC TMV 4V 680 uF caps… which aren’t any good news either.

      So here is what the motherboard looked like with its original caps:

      no-name Radeon 9600 XT recap and cooler
      by momaka
      I've been seeing a lot of cheap-looking (but not always so cheap) no-name AGP video cards on eBay for a while. They started popping up quite a bit when the market for AGP cards became more alive all of a sudden due to interest in “retro” PCs. One thing that struck me about these cheapo cards is that they almost always seem to come with garbage caps - including the abominable Sacon FZ. That aside, though, I've been wondering about the rest of the quality (or lack of?) on these cards. So I decided to satisfy my curiosity yet again.

      This one was actually suggested to me by ChaosLegionnaire....

      Recap motherboards :: Abit KG7-LITE and Soltek SL-75FRN2-L
      by Foetuss
      Hi all

      Hope this is in the correct place.

      I'm planning on recapping both motherboards. I actually already ordered recplament caps for them, where I will be changing out most for poly's.
      Could use some double checking to see if I'm not doing something stupid .

      Pictures of the boards are attached.
      What I will be replacing with what : (planned)

      Soltek Golden ::
      4 1500µF 16V 10mm (5mmL) KZG => APSG160ELL152MJ16S (Chemi-Con 1500µF 16V)
      6 3300µF 6.3V 10mm (5mmL) KZG => APSG160ELL272MJ20S (Chemi-Con 2700µF 16V)...

      Got 4 LG L222WS 22" for free - psu recap
      by goodpsusearch
      Got 4 CCFL 16/10 monitors for free.

      The resolution is almost Full HD (1680x1050)

      VGA Input only is a bummer though.

      Uses cheap TN panel with terrible viewing angles.

      Even though this is not 17" 5:4 screen, still has very low resell value here. Can be found for 15-20 euros.

      All the 4 monitors were not working and needed psu recap. Used mix of mediocre / junk caps to recap them, then donated 3 of them to friends/relatives and kept 1 for myself. Also like to install extra caps on empty spaces to help them last longer.

      BFG Tech. GeForce FX5200 [ASLM52256] – full recap info and cooler mod
      by momaka
      The more time passes, the more nostalgic I get with old hardware. Video cards and motherboards tend to be my weak spot. As such, I often scavenge eBay for old PC hardware, especially anything with bad caps or in need of similar minor repair.

      For today's consideration, I have a popular low-end card from back in the early 2000's: an nVidia GeForce FX5200. This one is the BFG Tech. Asylum take on the card, with 256 MB of DDR RAM running at 400 MHz and 128-bit bus (vs. 64-128 MB and 64-bit bus on many of the cheaper versions.)

      I think it's easy...
