Dimension 8300 Capacitors - Bad?

Hi,

Our Dell Dimension 8300 had a lot of random issues - Thermal Event Shutdowns (even though the temperatures looked normal) being the main one. Had a google, found it could be capacitor related - the optiplexes apparently had a major issue with Nichicon Caps (which sound/look similar to the ones on this board).

They're gold/black and bulging at the tops. They also had some goo leaking out which had hardened, so it fell off when I touched them (hence no goo on the picture).

They're 820uF, 6.3V apparently. And I'm fairly sure all 6 are bust. We've since bought a new PC, but I thought I'd try and resurrect this one.

Does anyone have any advice on what to replace them with? I'm new to this, as you might have guessed!

Yep, those caps are done for! Contact Topcat here on the forums for replacement caps. He'll have what you need

I'm surprised that those 820/6.3 caps are that tall.... they should really be about the size of the caps on either end of them...

Would they have to be replaced with 820uF ones? I have a knackered Asus P4C800-E here, and that has 7 1500uF caps on it I could pinch.

MAy be not, but usually 820uF caps are used to provide fast transient response, wich is usually specified by the cpu vendor (Intel). Buy increasing the capacitance, may be the vrm could leave the specs on that. But on the other hand. 1000uf to 1500uf should may be ok. Any way, the 820uF size of caps, is for me always an indicator, that the initial board desing was done with solied polymer caps in mind. Thus, if it is otherwise a good board, some good oscons should be the absolut best option (may be somwhat overkill, but....).

I've seen so many posts on how bad the nichicon HM cap is. Could it be a counterfeit ?

May i know whether the mainboard is made in China ?

I recently bought a new p4p800-X mobo with counterfeit chemicon KZG caps (suspicious) as the caps are not in the same heigth.

no i doubt the caps are counterfeit because we are seeing total failure on all boards from that time. its just too many caps and across multiple brands.

The failing Nichicon HNs/HMs may have been an outsourced product. The text on the failing caps is a bit blurred compared to good Nichicons. There has been speculation that the manufacturer was Taicon (Nichicon Taiwan). However, Taicon caps have very crisp text, identical in most respects to original Nichicon.

Please post pics of your suspect/counterfeit KZGs. I've seen KZGs with both the thinly-scored vent (usually found on genuine Japanese-made NCCs) and the wider, indented vent (sometimes found on Samyoung, but also on suspect/counterfeit NCCs).
