    Aw F&*#!

I finished recapping my board about an hour and a half ago.
Besides needing to reposition some caps because they were bigger than origionals, everything went fine.....until i powered up the system.
No post, no display, no beep!

    ****Details following***
The drives don't spin up (or anything IDE except the zip drive) when they are plugged in and no POST.
The board and cards are receiving power and every fan is operating.
During the recap i nervously looked at 4-3 small resistors which were missing.

I have an uneasy feeling I recapped a board for nothing, am I screwed?

Doesn't sound promising.... What did the board do before recapping it?? If it POST'ed before recapping, check all your solder joints, and make sure you didnt get solder boogers stuck between pins somewhere... It happens a lot.

Prior to the recap, the board functioned fine (excluding the badcap signs.)
I will double check tomorrow after school. for some strange reason, I have a few extra caps left over and I ordered the caps with no spares.
I knew I should of done more practice!

Might have been prudent to pull a capacitor, clear the holes & replace component on a 1 to 1 basis, allowing you to keep track of what you just removed & what needs to be soldered in

To be completely honest... this is the approach I still use, as the time spent clearing/cleaning away solder & organising replacement component allows for my soldering iron to reach peak temperature

I replace caps by type - e.g. first all 2200uF (remove, clean holes, solder new caps), then all 1000uF.

I did that. I'm not so dumb I remove them all and then replace them
                just clear the cmos?
wouldn't removing the battery do the same?
                Either way, it didn't work.

                  Re: Aw F&*#!

                  I know where to check.

first:Through knowledge of installing a ribbon cable reverse (thus tripping the poly fuse),the drives won't power up and the system won't post until you install the cable correctly.

Second: some caps were larger and needed a little longer leads. one cap's leads were almost not trimmed at all so I could mount the heatsink woth no problem.

third: Because I only own a 25 watt wand iron and a 75 watt weller (a gun) I had problems removing caps with the 25 watt. I find being VERY careful with the 75 works fine too (got another board fixed with it). Possibly I screwed up and cooked a section?

fourth:those little resistors...I really can't figure out what happened to them other than they were flicked off by the AGP card pushing it's plastic clip into them. Very close to an intel chipset, could be IDE controller?

fifth: Instead of using my little bulb sucker, I used my plunger sucker. The kind that you push the top down on and when ready, push a button for a spring to push a plunger and thus suck the solder into the unit. Mabye it was too strong?

This is a disaster. I need that system to do school work and I can't do it on my laptop which has a wifi card which is very anal at connecting.

This is not fourth but the first thing - any parts missing can cause the board not to work.

here is the problem with the resistors:

                        Re: Aw F&*#!

I checked over the soldering and removed any large globs of solder that would be in question. I have removed, replaced and supposedly cleared the cmos. I checked to ensure all caps were replaced and installed the right way.
I could see quite a bit of rosin left over, left it alone. Fianlly, i could see several traces which have been scratched . The multimeter however showed that they were still intact and gust the top blue stuff was gone .
I looked for any extra missing resistors. That area was trashed by something and it's not the AGP clip. By the looks of it most resistors feed into an intel chipset.

                          *****END O THREAD*******

I spotted a foil pipe still stuck to one capacitor.
This combined with the resistors = a dead board

Off to ebay I go for a new 478 mobo.
