    Capxon strikes once again

One of my classmates is doing his first recap... It's a flatscreen TV of some sort.

However, the caps that went bad were a tad surprising: (sample he brought to class)

Yup, he blew a primary. Specifically, 4 or 5 of them (or so he tells me).

Looks like the next time I replace crapxons, the primaries will need it too. Never, ever, ever seen a blown primary in person until now.

It has happened to me more than once..
In fact the biggest ESR I have seen is on a primary cap(meter working fine.. )

likely on vs in a plasma.not a primary.even cheap crapxons will hold up on the primary side.

The Vs line is under almost the same stress as the PFC, so any decent capacitor should hold up.

Remind him the buffers may need replacement as the transients from the unstable power supply could kill the buffers. It happens on Hitachi sets.

Well mine is(was) on primary(right after bridge rectifier).

Yes, and I have heard of bad CapXon primaries on Vestel 32 inch LCD TVs. They are just awful capacitors! Never suitable, except for early failure!

Didn't know... My knowedge on Plasma screens is practically nada.

He and I chatted on this the other day... It was NOT a plasma... but really an LCD. a large one, I might add (a 42" IIRC).

Maybe one designed specifically for the US market without PFC. Could be a Philips? I know they used four large primaries on one US chassis to generate a doubled mains voltage and split tap.
