    Re-capping went.. well? Impossible! :P

I re-capped my Dell Inspiron 9200 today and it went 'OK' I guess.. I had no problems getting the old ones out, but I did have a bit of a time with clearing the holes. I have soldered before, but not very much so I was not expecting the computer to even work by the time I was done! Got the new caps in even though my soldering was not the most beautiful but she booted right up! I really have no faith in my soldering abilities, but something must have gone right or I am pretty sure she would not have even started up. I have been running Prime95 for 2 hours now and all seems well.. Are there any ways to 'test' my soldering connections on the caps while they are on the board?

Congratulations on getting your computer working again. It takes a lot of effort to replace MB capacitors it can be very discouraging if it fails to work. There may be others that can give you better advice than mine however I will give you my 2 cents. If you gently try to rock the capacitor with the tip of your finger it should firmly resist movement. When you are doing this you should observe the leads where you soldered them and you should not see any movement. On my first few attempts I would get the capacitor leads hot enough for the solder to bond to them but not the motherboard because it was not hot enough. The result looked like a lollypop, in other words a ball of solder on a stick.

Upload a photo of your soldering, it should be obvious how good they connections are

Elitebook 840 G5 Bios Chip Soldering Question
        by Azurain
        Hi everyone,

I have an HP Elitebook 840 G5 that I am trying to get working again. I've removed the front bios chip (the 32mb one) and have run it through HP unlocker already. I've uploaded and verified the new bin, but am now experiencing an issue that has led me to believe I've been soldering the chip back to the motherboard incorrectly.

Essentially, after re-soldering the chip back into its place and reassembling the laptop, the charging light immediately flashes orange and white and then shifts to a solid white. The capslock and numlock lights blink seven times...

Yihua 992DA+ Hot air gun and soldering rework station, burnt mark
        by Peter_1402
        Hi Everyone,
I bought a Yihua 992DA+ hot air gun and soldering iron unit from a used market.
        1. Soldering iron works great
        2. There is a burnt mark on the hot air gun handle.
I am a bit concern by the look of the melted plastic. I opened the hot air gun handle and took some readings with a multimeter.
Heating element ~ 75ohm. (Similar reading taken from a spare heating element that came with the unit.)
Thermocouple ~ 1.5ohm. (Similar reading from the spare heating element.)
Reed switch tested ok with a magnet.
From the above test, I can conclude...

SEF 551.10 - How to raise the temperature of the unleaded soldering furnace?
        by bpjl
        Hi,

We continue to struggle with the SEF 551.10 reflow oven. After we managed to start it in october - the topic here -> https://www.badcaps.net/forum/troubl...he-reflow-oven everything promised to be good. But...

While soldering with lead paste somehow goes, but we cannot force the stove to raise the temperature
that he would dissolve the unleaded binder. I even doubted what this bastard shows on screen and passed through it a thermocouple...

Recapping Sony ICF-SW55 - verifying cap values
        by proxneo
        Dear reader

I am performing a repair on a Sony ICF-SW55, which includes recapping (some) of the SMD capacitors on the mainboard. I am looking for verification of their values. At the moment, I'm 95% sure I've got the right values, but it is hard to find some official, credible or multiple independant sources on this.

At the moment, I have selected replacements based on the following list of values:

        3 x 470uF 10VDC
        3 x 4.7uF 35VDC
        4 x 47uF 50VDC
        8 x 22uF 6.3 VDC
        1 x 220uF 6.3VDC
        5 x 100uF 6.3VDC

        Which...

Modification to a ZD-987 desoldering/soldering station using a external switching power supply
        by sam_sam_sam
I have been working on this concept for quite some time now with limited success but recently I found a switching power supply that is setup for the voltage that this soldering station needs to operate at however it also needs part of the secondary circuit from the original switching power because you need several voltage rails

I once tried to get a ZD-915 desoldering station to work on a 18 volt battery power supply but unfortunately things did not go well but I did find a work around but I might try this idea again but going at a little differently more about this another time...
