Do you think it's BAD CAPS problem?

Hi. I'm like crazy thise days. Here what's coocking:
Was playing game and monitor screen got black, turn off PC by the
emergency button ...and can't turn it on agaen, just MOB light is on and
when pressing power button fans(case+CPU) moves litle bit.
First think was PSU, was going to RMA and one sec just for any case took
it off and swithed on second PC---WORKS!!!!(PSU).
Now i have the problem: what the hell is it?
Made minimal BOOT with same components-0 result.
    Changed Graphic card-0.
    Cahnged Memory -0.
Changed Lit.battery and reseted the MOB-0.
Changed Power BTn connection wire by another-0.
Changed CPU+FAN from working PC-0 results.
PSU i tested on second PC and works. Also tested VGA and Memory sticks-working, then i tested second PSU on thise
MOB and results are same-FANS moving litle and that's all, MOB light is on. Can't test CPU himself-(SY-P4RC350)-can't runs 3.4 GH, maybe need
BIOS update because MA site it does.
What else i can try more? (Someone sad it's BAD CAP'S problem on the MOB !!!!????)
How i need to make sure the CAP's are bad or not? It doesn't shows nothing speciphic. Maybe marks on the top? Good--"K" and bad ones-"X"?

PC: PIV 3.4 GH PRESCOT w/ZALMAN 120 mm CU fan.

How to TEST bad CAPS-any tools?

Was playing game and monitor screen got black, turn off PC by the
emergency button ...and can't turn it on agaen.
Removed the mobo from the case, puted it on a plain wood panel for test.
Here is the result: Just MOB+PSU+CPU+HS/Fan and speakers +mouse+
    Keyboard.
Touched Power SW pins by screw-driver:
    MOB light is ON
    Mouse is ON
    Keyboard light is ON
    Lissened from speakers "BOOMP"
    CPU+PSU Fans moved litle
All components worked on second PC. Thise means something is WRONG with
the MOB, it's ANY tools to check CAPS?

Re: Do you think it's BAD CAPS problem?

Looks like you've narrowed down the problem to either the motherboard or CPU. CPU is unlikely, it would have to be totally fried/shorted to cause the motherboard to cut power to everything, including the fans.

So your Soyo seems to be malfunctioning somehow. But where? Does the PSU actually trip when you try to power up the board? If so, it could be a short, perhaps a failed FET in one of the VRMs.

Are your caps bad? Perhaps - but as Will said, whatever the original cause, the problem seems more serious than merely a poor cap now.

                you have multimeter?
                it has 2 leads
set it to low volts dc and connect one lead to one lead of a cap there and one lead to the other lead of the caps
                tell us the volts..
yes while the board is running, flip it over to measure

Do you think it's better take to PC repair store?($40-50 for check up and repair if it will enough)
Or just replace the MOB with new one?

They're OST caps, on a mobo with a Prescott CPU. It's a safe guess that a recap of all the OSTs on the mobo will probably fix it - if it hasn't taken other mobo components with it.

Well, normal PC repair stores won`t recap anything. They swapp all components untill the system will be stable. Therefore if i am not wrong and there isn`t a quite interested and skilled stuff in your repair shop, you can change the MOBO by yourselv.
But keep in mind, that cheep PSU`s are a main concern in today`s IT equipment. Even good board`s with good capacitors can`t stand bad psu`s. So i recomend that you state the manufacturer of your psu and if you are able and knowing the high voltage risk (even if unpluged there could be enough energy stored in the I/P caps for may be an letal shock) open the psu and chek for bad caps too.
Read the PSU sektion here, you will be surprised how mad even reputable brands are realy.
Generall you can`t say if an PSu is working it will be good. Even with badly dammaged caps an psu can work without sign of problem, doing harm to all the other components in the meanwhile.
And of course, if the board`s caps are failing this can stress the other way the PSU`S caps to death..

Well this PSU is fine, the bad score is due to the manufacruer has caimed a to high wattage for marketing purposes.
So no problem there. So the motherboard is the bad guy here.

Well it is up to you, to mess around with that mobo. In generall the desing of vrm isn`t that bad, but as some more knowledgeable members has already stated it could possibly be a more complicated problem than just bad caps.
therefore if you can`t gett caps cheap and replace them at your own i would go for a new one. It will be at least the fastes way to get your system back on operation.
With that Asus i think you don`t can go wrong.

Well, at least the match was a little more pleasant then the final match....but anyway THX. I think the 3rd rank is ok if it has taken place in our country. Well next time in Afrika, may be we have a changse to win, if they devellop some good tactics and keeping on the good training. I wished that France has made the game...any way, it is just a game and some
But the goal against Germany from Italy was realy realy unhappy in the last 2 minutes.. if we would have lost after the 11m shooting (but probably we hadn`t )or if the goal would hav happend at the first 45minutes i think that would be far more easier to tolerate.....but not after that long time.
Any way, i viewed the game in a city with an big video screen with some friends and obviousely some and all in all it was very nice and emotionall.

changed out the cheap HEC caps on my tv power board to a mix of nichicon chemicon and panasonic caps below.

now there's louder buzzing noise from the yellow thing in the upper left corner. (anyone know what that yellow thing does? is that the transformer?)
and the screen flickers in brightness. It's a light flicker, but noticeable.

the buzzing ebbs and flows, like cicadas buzzing.
in similar fashion, the brightness flickering ebbs and flows. the flicker might stop for a minute or two.

these are all low esr caps, and I'm wondering if that might...

                                        Heathkit IO-4205 Power Supply Caps
                                        by eryjus
                                        Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."
                                        ...

Identifying caps on an old Zoom 9000
                                        by Paxman_Swede
                                        Hello!

I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

I have studied the board and...

Help with switching power supply caps

I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...
