I thought I had bad caps ... replaced board ... problem persists!

I have a Dell Precision 470 - a model notorious for having unreliable caps, and about 2 years ago I had a genuine "bad caps" experience, replaced the board and all was good for a long time.

So when recently I started getting exactly the same symptoms, I thought it must be bad caps again. The PC would reboot with no apparent cause in the Windows logs. At first the PC would be up for a whole day before restarting, but it rapidly became more frequent, and now I am lucky if it stays up for 2 mins.

I tried vaccuming the dust off the board, reseating all memory, cards etc and even swapped the graphics card and re-did the thermal paste between the CPU and the heat sink (although the BIOS doesn't reporting a CPU temperature issue). I examined the board and didn't see any bulging or leaking caps (as I had the first time), but I went ahead and replaced the board anyway.

I am still getting restarts though! Maybe they are less frequent than before, but still make the PC unusable.

So what component could account for this? The only things that are the same as before the board replacement are:

    Xeon CPU
    Memory
    Power supply
    VRM

    Many thanks

Check your power supply for bad caps. Chances are you have bloated caps causing unstable power to be sent to the motherboard.

If you have a multimeter, it is easy to check to see if you have stable voltages.

OK thanks. Getting replacement from eBay.

Replacement PSU is pointless, they all have the same problem (rubbish capacitors)

Get new capacitors and fix the one you have.

Agent24 - OK I may open the PSU up and try some surgery on it.

Is there any danger of electrocution from capacitance inside the PSU?

From caps, only if it's broken...
The caps have a discharge path so unless the path is broke caps aren't a problem.
                .
                HOWEVER:
If it's plugged in to line power you can have almost 2x line voltage in there and on some models (probably most) the heatsinks are energized.

Open one up and measure the voltage of where you're thinking of touching compared to the case. The numbers should convince you how important it is to not touch. Unlike your fingers, you can attach the probes and watch the voltage change as you do various things such as turn on, turn off, and unplug to get an idea of how long it takes to become safe to touch.

Be sure to measure the AC and DC of the primary heat sink, the DC voltage of the large primary caps, and the DC voltage of both primary caps together.

Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

Hi and thanks in advance for any input you might provide!
I have a Sceptre U550CV-UMRD8POTV83BB 4K LED (this is a dumb tv) that I bought new in August 2021, so It's just completed 3 years.

Last Sunday I was watching a dvd and fell asleep for about half hour, when I awoke the tv screen was black and couldn't get the dvd menu to show, so I changed the input to antenna and had sound but no picture, turned it off. I then got online and found this great site! ....read many troubleshooting tips and this...

Replacement caps for Samson Resolv studio monitor 65A Amp board.
                    by black6host
                    Good day!

I have a Samson Resolv studio monitor that has no sound output. I've opened it up and found two caps that are bulging on what I believe to be the power supply section of the amplifier board. The board is marked Resolv 65A AMP V1.2. The caps in question are YUSCON, 2200uF, 35V, 85C temp and have markings of RA(P) and are 16mm x 25.5mm tall. I've attached the schematic and the caps in question are C5 and C6. I'm assuming they are low esr caps. I've tested both caps and they test low uF, nowhere near 2200uF.

I'm going to replace the caps and I'll be the first...

                    Hello lads,

Will give a quick summary. Bought this laptop as broken. Initial board had shorted SOC (VCCGT coil shorted to GND, checked all caps and just desoldered soc to confirm, dead short from VCCGT to GND on soc). I ordered a replacement board. Board model Q326FA Rev 2.0: is: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005...1309180228rsDj

Installed the new board laptop booted but display was flickering very ugly in bios. Horizontal and vertical artifacts. I thought the GPU is dead but it turned out it was some almost broken...

I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.
