so when 1000 uf caps red at 1150 uf does this mean capacitor should not be used and is this signs of a deteriorating capacitor or has it simply been made that way

Re: capacitor value too high
yes, but thats VR, in the real world at room temperature your going to get -20% and +nothing%.
they are never over - i'v always suspected they are graded at the factory for special customers.
and i have seen many dozens of caps read over-value.
every one had internal leakage on my tester
he could charge it with a battery and then leave it for a while before checking it with a voltmeter but i'm telling you now that it's gonna self-dischargeComment

Re: capacitor value too high
That's typical .. Lot of people confuse testing devices functions . Those are mainly a quick help to locate a problem , and accelerate a repair , but professionals repairers always have in their arsenal electronic circuits to test specific components under load . The more components circuits loaders you have , the more you're a professional .Comment

Re: capacitor value too high
Usually higher capacitance means higher internal electrical leakage.
However, I also say it depends on the capacitor brand and series a little - as in, if you see around 15% or higher capacitance on a Chinese, Taiwanese, or Korean brand, it's probably a safe bet the capacitor's electrolyte has started to break down, causing internal leakage to go higher, and most likely will continue to go higher / break down further, leading to failure over time.
With the reputable Japanese brands, though, I treat them a little differently, since even a cap with higher internal leakage could still last longer than a cheap no-name garbage brand. For example, I still have some Nichicon HZ 6.3V 2200 uF with date codes beginning with H05 (from Xbox 360 motherboards) that are known to go bad over time. Almost all of my stock of these has gone bad. The very few that I still have that haven't bulged/leaked read well over 20% capacitance... and have been that way for a number of years. So clearly they are not to be used for anything long term. However, they still work good enough for testing out or temporary equipment recaps if I don't have enough caps. So even in their "half-failed" state, they have been more reliable than some no-name garbage brands.
Of course, the bottom line is: if you're doing a repair you want to last a while, don't use caps that have higher than 10% higher capacitance, especially any non-Japanese brands.
You're wasting good rubber feet!

in the old days capacitors could be something like -10 / + 100 percent .Comment

Re: capacitor value too high
Need leakage tester. If you see high leakage with high 'capacitance' be sure to mark the capacitance suspect.
Note that pretty much all aluminum electrolytics leak some current, question is how much and how much is too much. The larger the capacitance the larger the expected leakage -- to an extent.Comment

by PrologHi people, I hope this is the correct spot to post this, I'm new to the forum.
I have an RTX 3080 Founders Edition which has a burnt up capacitor (it was in parallel with another capacitor which appears damaged too), so I am hoping to be able to identify the capacitor values and order replacements.
I hope these photos make it clear which component I am referring to:
(yes, the soldering is a bit botched from removing the blown one, I know)
I have found the board schematic (attached), but there does not seem to be a boardview available. I have never... -
by chth96I desoldered samwha NF capacitor(50v 5.6uf) from PCB circuit of 29inch CRT TV which have symptoms of no display after I heard sound of inrush of current to TV whenever I switch on this television.
I measured ESR value of this non-polarized capacitor(samwha NF capacitor 50v 5.6uf) by means of MESR-100 ESR meter and It displayed 0.3 ohm
And When I measured its capacitance with digital multimeter and LCR-T4 Mega328 meter, It displayed 10uf from DMM and 8uf from LCR-T4 meter.
I found catalogue of samwha capacitor(samwha-catalogue_3.pdf file), which is attached to this thread,...-

by chth96When I tried to repair LG 29 inch CRT TV, I found that the ESR value of samyoung SMS capacitor(160v 2.2uf), which is very close to D1879 transistor, is 6 ohm.
Judging from above ESR Meter Table,I think It is necessary to replace this sms capacitor. So I visited local electronics shop, and I purchased 160v 2.2uf rubycon YK capacitor.
But when I browse through rubycon YK datasheet,I found that there is no ripple current rating for 160v 2.2uf specification. But On the contrary, I found 39 mA ripple current rating for 160v 2.2uf SMS capacitor.
Rubycon YK DataSheet (b...-

by chth96a few days ago I finally purchased mser-100 v2 and I tested its abillity of measuring ESR value.
I found that It shows pretty accurate ESR value for electrolytic capacitor,But When I measure polymer capacitor of dreamcast game console,I found that one third of polymer capacitor's ESR value is more than twice the value of ESR meter table.(for example, I measured one polymer capacitor of 6.3v 100uf, It showed ESR value of 7.68)
Although my dreamcast now turns 20 years old but it still works. I occasionally have played game with it.
Is this ESR value of polymer capacitor correct?...-

by clearchrisI'm getting ready to put in a capacitor order. I generally look for nichicon, panny, kemet, or united chemicon, and I'm noticing that there aren't any 1000 hour caps anymore, and not many 2000 hour caps. Most of the caps are rated around 5000 hours or better. Last time I ordered, 1000 hour caps were pretty much most of them, and the very few 10,000 hour caps had pretty bad specs.
So what's the deal, have we made major progress with capacitor reliability in the past few years? Are these high lifetime caps ok to use? It's not that I wouldn't welcome the change, I really would, I'm...-
