    Is it safe to ship electrolytic caps by air?

    I've read that caps can leak due to extremely low atmospheric pressure. How about in a plane's unpressurized cargo bay?

    and I gotta wonder if the Chinese govt trusts Chinese caps for their spy balloons…

      Not a big deal, the low pressure effectively similar to heating them as both would result in higher internal pressure over ambient. China has satellites and space equipment too, and these have even tougher conditions than at 60k feet.

              It's fine.

              The caps will be OK. I've shipped caps with me in my checked-in bags many times. Also shipped computers and computer equipment with capacitors, some of which has been in use for over 10 years now. No leakage - not even from old cheapo Taiwanese capacitor brands.

              If this was an issue, we'd see a lot of laptop chargers get damaged, especially for frequent flyers... which I can tell you has never been the case. So it's OK.

                      I have a situation where a power supply is commonly abused and the 12v supply caps take a beating. They don't commonly fail but they run hot. I was thinking about going from a liquid electrolytic (Panasonic FC and Nichicon HE) to an organic polymer. The values have been 330uF. I typically use a higher-than-needed voltage to get a lower ESR. The supply is operated from 12v.

                      If not organic polymer, what would be the caps that could take the most abuse?

                      HI all,

                      I am working on some boards where all 100+ SMD caps have to be replaced (yes, they actually went bad!). I found a workflow to remove them comfortably (two irons, pre-heater and extra hot air for larger ones on ground planes).
                      When it comes to soldering them back, I add solder to one pad and then I use a plastic tweezer to keep them in the right place while I solder that leg.

                      The tweezer works - but I was wondering if there is a more "dedicated" tool or whether someone has a better idea. If it was for a bunch of caps then who cares. But because...

                      Hello!

                      I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

                      The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

                      Help with switching power supply caps

                      I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
                      I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...
