• Re: Recapping KRK VXT6 without original datasheets

Oh, I forgot to say. Yes, I saw the Rokit video. My model seems to have a different formulation. It's not brittle and I get no continuity through it. It's actually so gooey I ruined a good brush scrubbing it off my hands. The next day I found a better solution. There's a solvent pad called Remove. It's for cleaning off medical adhesive. That worked like a charm.

HA! I can't believe I never noticed that! It's just like the picture. But, I can't figure out how to open that door. Wait - I just did. The fuse is burnt up. And there's a spare in the compartment. I swapped it out and IT'S ALIVE!! OMG I can not thank you enough!

Umm… I thought I had checked the voltage, but I guess I had not. It turns out my Klein voltage detector pen gives a little beep whenever it touches anything. That's all I got when I touched the board's power leads. If I push the probe into a mains outlet it gives a much louder beep-beep-beep.
The reason I discovered this NOW, is I just installed my new-old-stock freshly recapped board and the amp still does nothing. No lights, sounds or heat. Honestly, I was worried that the unit failed so dramatically...

• Re: Should I use this solder?

I play guitar, especially fingerstyle acoustic. Also electric, classical & bass. I don't play for a living, it's practically impossible. I build & repair instruments. And I've recorded soundtracks for a few indy films.

Musicians are broke. That's why they use old (free) solder. But, this English-made Ersin has been working fine, so far.

• Is it safe to ship electrolytic caps by air?

I've read that caps can leak due to extremely low atmospheric pressure. How about in a plane's unpressurized cargo bay?

and I gotta wonder if the Chinese govt trusts Chinese caps for their spy balloons…

Thank you! I've been reading a ton of articles on soldering recently and you're the first person to mention the flux absorbing moisture.

• Should I use this solder?

I inherited this old spool of Ersin Multicore. I'm about to recap a KRK VXT6 powered reference speaker. From what I've read, this solder is better for the job than the others I've got on hand, Kester 50/50 or Tandy 60/40.
I'm asking though, because I don't understand much of the label and haven't been able to find a datasheet for this exact product.
Thanks for your input....

• Re: Lesser of 3 evils?

It does have a large transformer that plugs directly into mains power. I don't know why it was built with 105c caps. But, since I don't know, that's why I'm trying to stick with the original specs.
The reason for recapping isn't necessarily the amp's initial failure. Though it occurred after the thing spent a few months in storage. Until then, it had been plugged in almost continuously & working fine for 15 years. That's a cap failure scenario.
I first tried to fix it with new-old-stock replacement boards. A real bargain. Probably the last...

• Re: Lesser of 3 evils?

I don't recall the back plate on these speakers getting above lukewarm, even after a full day of mixing. And that plate serves as the heatsink. The only time it got worryingly hot was when it failed [snap, crackle, POP]. I put the plate in my bench vise and plugged it back in. I think the laser thermometer only found heat where the transformer plugs into the woofer's amp and on one of the bloated 12000uF caps. I should've written it down, but I think the highest reading I got was 170F, about 77c.
So, I'm liking your reasoning. They've got 12000uF in...

Lesser of 3 evils?

Hi, my project is nearly on the right track https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=115083 However, there's one last electrolytic cap that I need to replace and it's just not available, even at higher voltage. So, this question is a bit more general & maybe off-topic from my previous thread.
I'm recapping a powered speaker that contains a mains transformer & all e-caps are 105c-rated general-purpose radial cans. The one I can't match is 12000uF 50V 10mm-spaced snap-in, 30mm diameter, ±20% tolerance. And here are my options:
A) iffy quality: I've already...

• Re: Recapping KRK VXT6 without original datasheets

Ok, one more question.
I've loaded my digikey cart with everything I need. All well-regarded brands Panasonic, CDE, Nichicon, Rubycon. A couple are Wurth, which I haven't heard anything about. But, since it's a German company I figured it's good. Also, some Kemet.
Q: I have already replaced the TWBOR 12000uF 50V 105c 30x50mm snap-ins with JCCON 63V. [I recall reading somewhere in the JCCON docs that these have a 52V "minimum operating voltage". Honestly, I've been unable to find that wording again and maybe...

• Re: Recapping KRK VXT6 without original datasheets

Thank you for the quick & excellent response! It's a huge relief that I can use general purpose caps. And thanks for fixing my table.

The fuse idea is interesting. There was so much heat with the initial failure, that I did expect to find a fuse blown. There's nothing inside labeled 'fuse'. However, as Capsleaker mentioned in that other thread, R55 & R56 may serve as fuses. Those look intact on my original board. And on the new boards, of course.

But, [and I presume this is your point] I also...

• Recapping KRK VXT6 without original datasheets

I'm desperate to save my pair of 2007 KRK VXT6 studio monitors, one of which died.
Hoping for an easy fix, I bought a pair of new-old-stock replacement main boards. I installed one & it was DOA. Tried the other, also DOA. I suspect that 15 years in a Maltese warehouse dried out the electrolytic caps. I tried replacing just the two largest caps, which didn't help. Except to confirm that the old ones wouldn't reach infinite resistance & were a gram underweight.
Q: How do I match the caps, since there's no series marked on the originals and no circa-2007 catalog or datasheets...

• Re: VXT6 KRK speaker, schematic/advice please

I'm presently trying to fix a VXT6, one of a pair I bought new & worked just fine until I had to put them away during a 3 month remodeling project. In other words, they'd been powered-up on standby almost continuously since 2007. When I plugged them back in, they sounded right. Except some crackling started coming from one unit. Barely noticeable in the background of the audio signal, at first. As I tried different audio cables & sources, I noticed the crackling continued even with no audio cable plugged in. So I resumed using...
