The Tribune reports that not only have NEC products been counterfeited but an investigation on going since mid 2004 discovered that a fake parallel NEC company had been established with links to 50 factories in Hong Kong, China and Taiwan.
Personnel even had NEC business cards and commissioned R&D in the name of NEC to not only counterfeit NEC products but they also produced a range of NEC products which NEC does not offer. These were from home entertainment systems, mp3 players, batteries, microphones to DVD players. 50 different products.
The investigation revealed that the products were on sale not only in Asia but in Africa and Europe as well.
One of the factories insisted that they had an official license from NEC to make the products. The fake brand even required the factories to pay licensing fees to make the products and issued official looking warranty and service documents.
Some of the factories had erected NEC signs and shipped their products packaged in authentic looking boxes and provided NEC branded display equipment for the shops.
