I'm just baffled that the repair shop didn't fix this. It'd have been an easy couple hundred bucks for almost no work, and the customer wouldn't have hesitated for a second to pay that. Idiots.

There are a couple of traps for the semi-competent shop on this TV. The first is the error code. If the original software is still present, the TV flashes error code 63 on the power LED. A sloppy tech looking it up would see 'Defective panel' as the fault (even though the service manual also indicates that error code is never flashed on the LED). If the software has been upgraded it correctly flashes error code 7.

If the shop is incapable of doing board level repairs, the list price of a replacement supply is $285. Even if the shop recognizes the problem and is capable of replacing the caps, what are the chances they will use general purpose caps? I'm pretty sure these particular caps get a real workout and gp caps would quickly fail, if they even solved the problem.

And last, this is somewhat of a bear to repair. It takes two people to move the set around, and there are something like 60 screws to pull to get the back off. Personally, I would want $100 for labor to tackle the job.

Wizard, I've got an opportunity to pick up the same model TV (42PF7220A), but this one has 'red horizontal lines through the top half of the picture'. I assume this would be either driver board or one of the -sus boards. Would you happen to know if the driver boards are replaceable, or are they a part of the panel?

I have this same model tv 42PF7220A with the same 7 flashing red light indicator. I opened it up to get a look at the power supply but I see no blown or bulging capacitor. Should I just replace the same two capacitor the original poster BADHIGEEN replaced? Are those two particular capacitors usually the problem? Or should I just go ahead and try to replace all the capacitors? All the capacitors I have are flat and don't appear to have been blown out.

Error code 7 is a failure of the 8.6V supply. Usually the output connectors are labeled with the voltages they carry. As a first step, measure the 8.6 volt output. You will have only a few seconds to do this. IIRC, someone else had the same failure code and what appeared to be good caps. He went ahead and replaced them. It did NOT fix the problem.

The power supply led flashes green 3 times. VSCAN voltage drops to zero (or climbs). I unplugged the power feed cable to the y-sustain board and the error codes go away and VSCAN voltage remains at -190VDC. Which components on the psu control the Vscan that I can change? I would prefer not to swap out psu as its expensive. Thanks for any help

Hookay, let's see if I understand what you are saying. With the Y-sustain connected, the protection LED comes on, and Vscan is incorrect. If the Y-Sustain is disconnected, Vscan is steady at -190 volts and the protection LED does not come on.

Instead of looking for problems in the power supply, perhaps you should be asking why the Y-Sustain is is overloading the the Vscan output of the power supply.

HINT: The usual cause of this problem is shorted transistor(s) in the Y-Sustain caused by one or more shorted buffers in the upper and lower Y buffer boards.
