    soldering ic

hi all, on some ic's there is a heat sink on the bottom that is soldered to the board. my question is, can I just apply heat sink compound to the bottom of the ic instead of soldering it?

    Re: soldering ic

Depends, but very likely you're not going to get as good thermal conductance especially when you can't clamp it plus any residual solder is going to add to the resistance due to imperfections... Best to solder.

The bottom of some ICs is ground so needs to be soldered.

Mounting and Handling Guidelines for TO220 TO220F TO247 Cases / Packages

The TO220, TO220F and TO247 are the popular packages for power devices because of their versatility and ability to dissipate moderate amounts of heat. This application note describes the basic guidelines for handling power MOSFETs in TO220, TO220 and TO247 packages shown in Figure 1. Please note that only mechanical and soldering guidelines are covered here. Additional precautions are required for isolating high voltage rated devices to meet safety regulations.

Guide to transplant MEC1503 EC chip and EEPROM reprogamming for T14s gen 2 and X13 gen 2
          by acedogblast
This is a guide that I am writing for helping others to replace their MEC1503 EC chip if it breaks (or to get around an inconvenient prompt to the BIOS). This forum has been extremely helpful to me so I would like to contribute to help others. I will tell you right now that this task is very difficult to do. You MUST have experience and tools to do precision micro-soldering, BGA reballing, trace repair, and general laptop repair skills.

There are some specialty tools needed to do this task. The replacement MEC1503 chips can be acquired from Aliexpress. Do not buy the bare chips as...

          Repair Success! Middle Atlantic UPS2200R-IP
          by valvashon
Yesterday I successfully repaired a Middle Atlantic UPS2200R-IP that had inadvertently been used as a surge suppressor at our transmitter site. It has already been replaced with an updated one but it's coming home with me now instead of being e-cycled. To be specific, this is the MA model that has the blue backlit display and has been discontinued, although this design may have been used in many UPS units including the smaller Middle Atlantic ones in this series.

Here's what happened: We experienced a brownout/surge at the site, which damaged the UPS and took our broadcasting...

          Problem

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....

Compaq CQ71 PQ 48 help needed, please.

          Hello
I do not do many motherboards and I was asked if I can something to repair it.

So, I said yes (kind of forced!).

I started checking PW from plug ... then found there was no 3v3 on PW switch.

Then I checked various mos-fets as I did not have schematic - which then found here - thanks.

Not finding anything work - LED on Vin is not pulled down, I then finishes taking motherboard off the laptop and checked other side and found PQ48 practically shorted and getting slightly warmer.

          I also checked it visually...
