hi all, on some ic's there is a heat sink on the bottom that is soldered to the board. my question is, can I just apply heat sink compound to the bottom of the ic instead of soldering it?

Depends, but very likely you're not going to get as good thermal conductance especially when you can't clamp it plus any residual solder is going to add to the resistance due to imperfections... Best to solder. -

The bottom of some ICs is ground so needs to be soldered.Comment
