    Vizio M470VT

Hi Guys. This TV was used at work, thought i'd try and give it a second life with my kids if it's fixable!

    Vizio M470VT

Screen turns on, and I hear what sounds like a fan failing to turn from the device. The screen instantly starts producing lines and they get larger as time goes on. The device responds to power on, power off via remote.

Any advice on where to stat would be most excellent. Thanks guys!

This time when i powered on, it had no trouble displaying the menu and had no lines.

I placed a USB device into the TV, and immediately the top of the screen, every 2 seconds, will display black lines

I would be checking leads into and out of tcon for a clean and secure properly in clips. Would only use HDMI or av for testing. And suspect possibly two problems.

I'm not super savvy with tech terms. The original picture i showed was with nothing plugged in, also.

Were you referring to internal components i should check on?

At work, this TV was used only as a display for USB stick w/ images to be cycled through. One day, it just started displaying lines in the image from the top 6 inches of the screen.

I was able to capture this again. This is using HDMI and after about 2 minutes, powered on.

The video reacts every 4 seconds or so, freezes the image and runs these lines down from the top, gradually becoming more extreme over time. After 5 minutes, the whole screen has jailbars from top to bottom, and the top of the image continues to move with these horizontal lines.

Hi p2computing;don't know if that's your issue but it's worth it to try, this is what i did to the BGA chip heating process,
i applied the same method as the Ps3 YLOD fix tutorial just by heating first bottom side with low heat then with high heat the heat sink , let it cool for an hour then put it together
and fixed the issue, still running til now.

I'm happy to solder / reflow / replace caps / clean and re-seat boards etc, but i don't really have the necessary tools for the PS3 heating method aside from a heat gun used for automotive applications.

Can you provide a link to the method suggested?

Bro that's all you need a heating gun.Just follow the heating process and disregard everything else, take out the main board and put it on a flat surface start heating the bottom just like in the video then move to the BGA Heat sink just like you see in the video, use a Watch to count the minutes so you don't burn the chip,if you don't know which part in the main board you should heat, just tell me i'll send you a pic of the BGA that you should heat up.

Sounds like a plan. I'll try to get at this today

This is your main board and under the big heat sink that's where the BGA (CPU) is,just circle the BGA on the big heat sink where you should heat more , heat both sides per instructions on the video.

So to be sure, I don't want to remove the heat shield before trying this? I've got the board out and ready to give it a shot

Whatever solder they used on this is absolute garbage. I can't even remove the shielding over the chip. My desolder braid won't pick it up

I gave it a try, now it's worse than before. Won't even start up and get past the VIZIO opening image.

You do not take the heat sink out, you do it over it,are sure you did it right?,and did not move or tough the board for at least 30 minutes after heating it?

This was my first attempt at using passive heat to fix solder joints, i have no way of knowing if it was reflowed, no way of knowing how long to apply heat or how much heat with a heat shield in the way, etc etc. It definitely did more harm than good because it doesn't work even as well as before.

Maybe I can find a new board for $50 and be happy with that.
