    Dead Mitsubshi XD211U projector

Good day folks. I got myself a pretty interesting "winter project" to mess around with, since it's getting cold and it's mostly indoors activities now like tinkering with stuff around the shop

So: my boss threw away a Mitsubishi projector which has dead pixels on it - faulty DMD chip, too expensive to replace, "you can have it if you want" sort-of deal, so I took it and it sat in my closet for quite some time now, since I wasn't too sure what I was going to do with it, until a few days ago when I started looking around local auction sites for a similar projector with a different fault, hoping to find a cheap one for a DMD swap....I found one, but the model is not exactly the same: mine is a SD220u and this one is an XD211u...quite a big difference, but it really was dirt cheap so I bought it, even though I was 90% sure the DMDs wouldn't match Before buying it, the chap said it's probably got a dead lamp, which slightly contradicts the "dead" status of the thing, since even with a dead lamp, I ASSUME I should at least get a bloody LED to come on....

Anyway, I plugged it in and sure enough, nothing: no leds, no picture, no noises...D-A-D DEAD ! First problem was trying to figure out what exactly causes this: the lamp, the power supply, the main board, the lack of a remote control? Yes, it may sound stupid, but this thing doesn't have a power button: all the buttons (I mean ALL of them) are on the remote which snaps onto the top of the projector and becomes like a control panel, which is the stupidest design I've ever seen and of course it didn't come with one! The one donated by my boss DOES have the remote, but it does nothing - it's either not compatible, or the projector is dead and wouldn't respond. According to the user manual, the thing should turn on or at least flash some LEDs at me as soon as I plug the power lead in.

I took the cover off and inside I found a tasty little switch mode power supply. I must admit, I haven't done any extensive measurements yet, but there IS 230v going into the power connector, so something doesn't look right (fuse is OK).

Can't find a service manual for it, which brings me to my next topic: can someone please help ? Cheers I only found one for an XD221u, which is similar to my original SD220 with the faulty DMD (confusing, I know ). Looking at the drawings, it doesn't look like the power supplies match, though I haven't analyzed the schematics closely. I need to at least figure out the pinout at CN201 in the bottom-right of the board in the picture to see if it outputs anything. It would be great if it was just a PSU issue. Thanks for any input.

    Re: Dead Mitsubshi XD211U projector

Believe it or not, one year later I made some progress on this thing: I got the power supply to power on and got a blinking green power LED on the projector The PSU sat on my "to-do" shelf and today I got around to it mostly because I had nothing else to do and not really knowing what I was doing, I tried heating up the board a bit and measure the output: sure enough, I got 12v on the output so I replaced the two small caps at the right of the main one and it's back in business.....at least I hope so, because I still have no remote for it or any way of turning it on...WTF ? :|

I used the IR blaster on an LG G3 to get it going and sure enough it does work but unfortunately the DMD is knackered and looks like THIS....trash unfortunately. I was hoping it just had power supply issues and the owner sold it just because of that, but the DMD is also done for.....

            Totally not worth it IMO.
