    Sony 55" 930d - Video quality issue - Macroblocking

    Hello,

I am hoping that someone is able to assist with a fix for my home theater situation. I recently purchased a 55" Sony 930D from Magnolia. The previous TV I replaced had a lot of issues with picture quality so we upgraded to fix it, instead the problem continues to persist. The video tends to have massive macroblocking on regular, HD, and 4k. The colors are often off and to give an example is black with shadows will typically show up more of a green or faded green. The audio is sometimes off but can be fixed by going into the tv settings and turning off the audio sound compression feature and turning it back on. We have replaced the TV thinking maybe it was a bad board or processor, I have replaced the HDMI cables to ensure cables were not bad, we've even add a Panamax power conditioner to ensure it wasn't some sort of problem with the power going into the device and causing problems. The problem happens on my Comcast box, on my PS4, Xbox one, any streaming programs such as Netflix of Amazon video, we even removed all items from the TV and ran Netflix through the Android TV build int.

After all of this Best Buy has no clue what could be causing it, the only thing left they can think of is some sort of RF/Magnetic interference because the TV they replaced work without issue when they plugged it in at the store to test after it was swapped. I am at a loss and the picture quality is terrible. If anyone has any suggestions or alternative ideas from what Best Buy thinks I would appreciate it. I should note I also turned everything in the breaker box off except where the TV was to help rule out if something like my washing machine or appliances were causing the interference.

With every thing disconnected, if you connect a DVD player via the RCA Inputs do you have the issue persisting?

Is this problem only when you use something on the network / Internet like any streaming service etc or watch a vid from a NAS or server? If so, I would check your network cable, router, router settings, or maybe Wifi signal etc. Your description is a bit too vague for me.
I'd like to see a DVD or a BlueRay player hooked up to the TV playing an original DVD or BlueRay, in order to rule that online jazz out.

as most tech's would do, feed in a known test pattern from a blu-ray or dvd (patterns for resolution checks / color bars, etc) which can be found in some special features of the discs or on-line as a computer files. Then people can evaluate your "observations" with resulting pictures. My initial guess is you have some settings no quite right or possibly signal "errors". Further, as suggested, get your hands on some rgb output device and feed it in and see if there is a difference.

OF course, you are having the set "upscale" everything to 4k... right? :-) maybe your expectations of what that can do with "poor inputs"... :-)

Hey all, thank you for your replies. We did test content from a few Blu Rays and 4k movies with nearly the same result. The Blu-ray movies were tested on the same TV at Best Buy and then again at home. We tested Star Wars EP2 for example, when watching the same scene where the characters were in a elevator the copy at Best Buy looked great but on my TV the shadows of the robes were a green tint. We did play with the HUE and Color temp settings to see if it would affect it all, very slight change. We also tested Avengers Civil war at both locations and very similar results.

I am not sure I have any RGB devices, most items I have are game systems, perhaps my cable box is but I will have to see. I'll see if I can find any calibration software, perhaps Best Buy will have one I can borrow.

You have done some good testing. Of course, there is a lot more to this environment than "plain testing" as a number of characteristic come into play.... some of which are very subjective and without an actual side by side comparison, may be hard to convey / overcome.

Without knowing and listing all settings, it would be very difficult to troubleshoot the problem. :-(

Further even though you indicate a visual difference/result between your setup and the store for the "same tv", you aren't necessarily comparing things like settings / capability at both the display and the source.

Last question / comment would be... what have you done to calibrate your display?

While I have not done any professional calibration or used any software to do so, I have looked up numerous "suggestions" for the TV. We've checked through every preset option, used the automatic options, and tried changing everything, including the HUE in hopes it would remove the Green tint. Between the macroblocking and discoloration - also noticing Ghosting on certain sources such as the Xbox One when playing video games, I am at a loss. The only suggestion Best Buy and their audio video mgr is it has to be EMI.

Did you try moving the TV and the player to a different part of the house and recheck?

Well, without setting up a tv with some form of "discipline" (it doesn't have to be professional... but it has needs to have some rigor.... not it looks ok... there are numerous test pattern to help in this area).

My guess in general would be, too high of brightness / backlighting along with possible gamma or color decoding (some of these might require a bit more "effort" / technical effort to overcome).

again, without settings information, you are asking a lot for the forum to "read with your eyes" what you have tried / looked at.
