Samsung PN60F5500, making me question my sanity

Very odd, this one. I really hope someone can help me figure this one out and bear with my lengthy story, which I hope at least helps.

    Full model: PN60F5500AFXZA
    version: US01

    Symptom: No picture, audio okay.

Detail: Brief flash from panel around edges, but doesn't stay lit.

What I found: Opened up the set, measured VS and VA, (this is where I'm questioning my sanity) because I swear they didn't come at all or started to and went down long before reaching correct voltage, but now I'm questioning whether I'm remembering this wrong, even though I thought I was very certain how it acted. Anyway, this model doesn't seem to have a relay, so there is no clicking and there is a red power LED that flashes a few times when the TV is plugged in, but not repeating; I think this is just the normal flashing LED upon start up. Also, this model doesn't have a logic board, but the main board has a very slow flashing green LED near the center of the board.

I then unplugged the power cable to the Y-Main and found that the VS and VA both came ALL THE WAY UP when TV plugged in, but immediately started dropping down to nothing, which is probably normal, but to me, would say that Y-Main was loading it down and causing it to not come up at all or drop much sooner as I thought I had found.

What I've done: So, I ordered a new Y-Main after pulling and checking the buffers and finding no shorts.

Results found after replacing Y-Main: The TV is acting the exact same way, the same symptoms as with the original Y-Main. Checking VS and VA shows them voltages coming ALL THE WAY UP and then dropping down. Unplugging Y-Main from power supply doesn't change that; the VS AND VA still come all the way and then drop.

What I tried next: I put the original Y-Main in and rechecked the VS AND VA and now I'm baffled. It's checking exactly like the replacement Y-Main: VS and VA come all the way up and then drop. The thing is, like I said earlier, I could have sworn the first time I did this check, the VS AND VA only partially came up or didn't come up at all and now I'm starting to doubt myself because of the length of time since I had made the first check, and yet again, I thought I verified and was certain in my mind.

So, now I dont' know what to do.

what I did next: I pulled the buffers again and recheck them: still good, reinstalled them. I pulled the power supply/X-Main (it's combined on this model) and checked for bad connections, soldered a few weak points, reinstalled. Symptom is still them same.

Any idea what I should try, check next?

Disconnect the ribbon between the main board and the Y main. Does the VS voltage stay where it should?
If so don't let it run for to long as you have now disconnected the protection circuit.
This will confirm an issue with your Y/buffers.
Also please provide the LJ92 number for your Y-sustain so we know what kind of sustain we are working with. The pictures unfortunately are a bit low quality.
      Thank you

Thank you, Nick! I will try to take better pictures next time or now if anyone wants. The number on the Y-SUS is LJ92-01958A. I will try that test and get back to you.

With the model number provided I was able to look up an hd picture off the shopjimmy website. So this board is designed a bit strange but if it is at fault I think I can guide you to fixing it.

Okay, so with the ribbon cable between the Main Board and the Y-SUS disconnected, the VS still comes all the way up (208V), but still immediately drops down.

Anyone? I have to get this figured out fairly quickly because I need to see whether I should keep this Y-Main from eBay or send it back.

Have you checked all fuses ? It's possible this model goes into shut down when it doesn't like what it sees.

That is what is odd, this model doesn't seem to have the typical fuses on the Y and X boards. I can only find the main AC fuse on the PS/X-Main. I'm not finding any solid state or otherwise fuses anywhere. You can look at the board pictures and see.

I could not find any fuses on the back of the boards. After more deliberation and out of desperation, I'm ordering the Power Supply/X-Main board and hoping this will fix the problem, but if anyone else can chime in and help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Well, darn. The Power Supply didn't have any effect. I am looking at the Main Board as being the only other thing, really, unless someone can help, thank you!

It's probably not the main board if the VS ON and PS ON signals are correct (~3V for VS ON and <1V for PS ON)
Try the test pattern trick here https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=26790

It looks like the control board is integrated into the main board but the same basic ideas apply, you can still test it but you will need to replace the whole main board if the control board part is also bad.

Tom66, thanks so much for stepping in! I'm assuming I don't need tocheck the VS ON and PS ON since the voltages do develop, right? Or did you want me to? Are those going to be pins on the main board connector going to the PS?

Also, regarding the test pattern trick: I read your other thread, but I'm not understanding how to do it for this particular TV; can you elaborate and help me figure it out? Do you need a clearer picture of the Main Board?

I'm in the same boat with a similar model 51E6500. But similar layout and protection mode. I don't get any picture though yet. Will be following this closely to see what we can find.

Posting a good focused pic of your main board might help someone to locate the jumpers for you.
