What type of multimeter are you using?

Don't know if this is ok to post here. What type of multimeter are you using to test igbt and mosfet? I am using a klein mm200 but I do not think it is able to do what I need. It only has an average .6 mv for testing in diode mode.

    What do you recommend?

Re: What type of multimeter are you using?

The Klein MM200 manual says diode test mode outputs a test current of 0.6mA and approximately 1.5V DC or less (probably depending on the battery condition).

If you are looking for a shorted igbt or mosfet, a reading of 0.00 or close to 0.00 tells you it is shorted.

What is your Klein not doing? Or put another way, what problems are you having? Be specific.

      For transistors, inducers, caps, mosfetshttps://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00NKY3M1W/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469493576&sr=8-1&pi=SL75_QL70&keywords=transistor+tester

      Dont laugh. It works great.

Isn't that tool is only good if the components are removed from the pcb? How would you use this tool to test ibgts and mosfets when they are on the pcb in circuit?

Any multimeter, even the cheapest one that you get free at Harbor Freight, can test for a simple short.

I want one tester that will do resistors, capacitors and igbt. I can not test if the mosfet or igbt will open and close. I could perform direct short tests but nothing else. I just bought a radio shack 2200087 it worked great on the igbt and mosfet but it only has a uf rating of 60. The Klein atleast went to 250 uf.

Any multimeter will measure resistance. The cheaper ones, however, will only go to 2M ohm.

Using a multimeter to measure capacitance is not as useful in troubleshooting because you are probably more interested in the ESR.

There is no handheld multimeter that will measure ESR. You need a separate tool for this functionality. It could be one linked in the Amazon or some variation of it.

Many multimeters will measure up to 10,000uF.

Be aware that sometimes in circuit readings could be misleading due to other components in the circuit path. If you get suspicious readings in circuit, desolder and verify out of circuit.

According to the manual, the 2200087 has

            DIODE MODE
            Open Circuit Voltage ................. < 2.8Vdc
Test Current ........................ 1 mA Typical

So it is almost double the open circuit voltage and almost double the test current compared to the Klein.

PS. I think this meter was selling for $10 USD when Radio Shack initially filed for bankruptcy.

True. This is a good tool to test your replacement parts before replacing and confirming parts with issues. It is good for testing unknown parts too.... just another tool in the tool box. I have 3 other multimeters (one is the free harbor freight) and 2 oscilloscopes.

Most of the time I use a Harbor Freight "CEN-TECH" P37772, good enough 90% of the time and cheap enough (Your Klein MM200 is a better meter than this, but you can pick the HF P37772 meters up for $10-15 on sale, so they're often good to have around) I'm not worried about damaging it. If I need higher precision I dig out the Extech MM570.

So, the general consensus is no matter what you will always need multiple testers.

BTW, 1.5V Diode mode test is too low to test White LED.
