    diagnose samsung plasma ps50c550....

    Hi All.

I'll start by saying while I have some electronics experience I am by no means a techy.

I am trying to repair my samsung 50" plasma.(ps50c550)
I've read many articles about it but haven't really been able to nail my issue.

The first sign of probs was when it started to show reddish pixels at the base of the screen. Then it shut off and now it does the power cycle thing.

I have inspected the boards and there are no visible bad caps, damaged or burnt components of any sort. No dry joints.

There is a little heat discoloration of the xsus board.

On my model I am unable to individually unplug the ysus xsus as the xsus runs through the ysus. however if I unplug the xsus from the ysus it doesn't power cycle. I still get nothing on screen though and at no time do i ever get audio.

During the power cycling I am getting over 300v @ VS instead of the stated 211v. I get around 20v @ VA rather than 55. These fall away if stay on them with the meter.

My suspicion is the xsus but before I buy it - anyone have any ideas or further tests I can run.

P.s. If i unplug everything from the power board i get no voltages.... even if I trick the board on with the "blue wire" to the control board. but i think there must be multiple triggers.

Thanks for any help... I can't afford a new tv at the mo..

Are you sure your meter is working?

I don't understand how you tricked it to come on?

The power supply for a Samsung is usually:

    PS-ON to GND

    And

    VS-ON to 5vstby

      Yes im sure...why?
The "blue wire" is ps-on and as i said from this alone i got no voltage.

Is there any way to test if the panel is ok?

I could get an xsus board and try it but that is all to no avail if the panel itself is faulty.

Test the boards for short circuit between vs,va and ground you may find its shorted some fets like the smaller ones do

Posting pictures of the back of your tv showing the boards with clear pictures may help you more with fixing your problem

              Hi wills123.
              Thanks for the help.

              VS is shorted to ground.
I unplugged all the boards and put them back 1x1 and it shorts again at the xsus.

Do you think this confirms my suspicion of the xsus board?

I am rather excited at the prospect of repairing the board rather than just buying a new one. Is there a way to test the fets without removing them from the board?

              Thanks heaps.
              Darren.

Following your thread with interest. I have about the same problem but my short is the VS line on the Y sustain board. And also unsure about testing FETs.
I am going to pull out the first one in the circuit downstream from the input power plug. I have several showing shorts but hoping it is just one or two.
One good thing you have going should you go that way... X boards are a lot less than Y boards.
                Good Luck

I'm in the process of repairing a few plasmas, and I keep reading that the square buffer chips die on most of these, and sometimes damage the y or x board driving it.

Normally the sustain board will kill the buffer on Samsungs. The fault on this one is likely to be the IGBT transistors on the Ymain.

At razor, yes xsus has a fault, test the y buffer board an u may find that has short too, on the smaller sets its the two outer fets on xsus that short, u may be able to replace just those but be warned if buffer has a fault or the y sums it will short again. Most people reccomended changing all 3 boards on the ps42c series. Just be sure to check each replacement board as there is a lot of faulty ones out there. I have two ps42c that need buffer boards that I have yet to locate good ones, had 4 sent to me faulty lol

I think I may have one of these x sus boards to spare. send board number to make sure.
