Why do some chips run so hot without a heat sink?

Why do some chips run so hot without a heat sink?
After working on quite a few electronic devices that heat causes major problems.
What the XXXX why don't they heat sink them.

My friends Plasma TV keep shutting down until I installed a small fan.

I'm working on a 32" sharp that the picture get un-viewable after it heats up

Circuit cool spray makes it work for about an hour

Some things are designed poorly. Heat is always a major problem in electronics. If cooling is skimped on then the life of the device will be limited.

ICs can handle various temperatures depending on manufacturing process, internal structures, package type etc. For example, in general memory ICs (sdram) which are basically small dies with lots of bond wires going to each IC pin would not be able to handle heat as well as linear regulator ICs which usually have a copper substrate that can radiate heat more efficiently.

Point is, just because a chip is hot, doesn't mean it's bad, doesn't mean the circuit is badly designed, it could be that the particular IC is warm/hot but still well within its thermal design. For example, a linear regulator that will crap out when internal die reaches 125C could obviously be as hot as 80C on the outside and in theory it would still be reliable for years, though it doesn't mean it would be a good idea to use it like that since it would cook the pcb and components around it.

Heat can cause problems in the sense that lots of fluctuations in temperature can cause shrinking and expansion and cause weak/cracked solder joints, a not that rare diagnostic for problems like the one you mention (like un-viewable after it heats up etc)

        heatsinks cost money.

Mounting and Handling Guidelines for TO220 TO220F TO247 Cases / Packages

The TO220, TO220F and TO247 are the popular packages for power devices because of their versatility and ability to dissipate moderate amounts of heat. This application note describes the basic guidelines for handling power MOSFETs in TO220, TO220 and TO247 packages shown in Figure 1. Please note that only mechanical and soldering guidelines are covered here. Additional precautions are required for isolating high voltage rated devices to meet safety regulations.

Best place to source RAM chips? 8GB 820-00850 boards to 16GB or 32GB
          by ugamazing
I'm looking to upgrade several 8GB 820-00850 boards to 16GB or 32GB for personal use. I am curious what the best practice and process is for sourcing new replacement chips, and what vendor(s) you guys prefer? Another question is, how do I find compatible chips and their corresponding part/model numbers? For example, in the 820-00850 schematic, the DDR chip U2600 model listed (EDFB232A1MA) corresponds to 1x32GB chip. Of course, I would need 4x8GB chips to replace the 4x2GB chips currently on the board. How do I find compatible 8GB chips? Is it as simple as searching "BGA178 8GB 2133"...

PS5 EDM-031 - Pulsing BLOD - SSD NAND chips never heat up
          by mattpd
PS5 died in the middle of a game and never would boot again. Pulsing BLOD stays on forever but never boots.

No LM damage. UART gives a generic "APU not responding" error.

Under thermal camera, the SSD NAND chips stay stone cold. The controller warms, but not the NAND. I have a good 2.5v and 1.8v around the NANDs...

I don't have a ton of PS5 experience, but I assume that the NAND would need to warm at least a little bit in order to boot...

So to those with experience, would you expect at least a little heat from the NAND during...

Guide to transplant MEC1503 EC chip and EEPROM reprogamming for T14s gen 2 and X13 gen 2
          by acedogblast
This is a guide that I am writing for helping others to replace their MEC1503 EC chip if it breaks (or to get around an inconvenient prompt to the BIOS). This forum has been extremely helpful to me so I would like to contribute to help others. I will tell you right now that this task is very difficult to do. You MUST have experience and tools to do precision micro-soldering, BGA reballing, trace repair, and general laptop repair skills.

There are some specialty tools needed to do this task. The replacement MEC1503 chips can be acquired from Aliexpress. Do not buy the bare chips as...

          Liquid cooling?
          by Hondaman
I hope my computer does not randomly reboot while typing this. My main system is the AsRock 970A-G/3.1 motherboard with the AMD 8150 chip. I am experiencing FREQUENT and RANDOM reboots once the system is used for a couple of hours (sometimes it reboots before I even get to the Win7/Linux Mint dual-boot screen). The problem MIGHT be the DRAM controller chip (I recently upgraded to the maximum 64 GB RAM). It also might be the VRM chips. I am using a typical aftermarket CPU cooler, which does NOT blow air DOWN onto the VRM heat sink.

(After previous generation hardware [Gigabyte] didn't...
