Cyberhome DVD 300/400 Preventative Cap Replacement

Checking out DVD players, found my Cyberhome has an imminent critical failure fault in it's built in PSU caused by Jenpo capacitors. Cyberhome was a decent player when it first arrived, offering picture quality very close to luxury players without the *anker price tag.

6v Oscon SP 680uF was used to replace the Jenpo 1000uF 10v, 2200uF G-Luxon was left alone as the reports I read only apply to Jenpo capacitors. Apparently some have a Jenpo 2200uF but mine didn't.

Preventative maintenance cost was under a dollar, perhaps the player works better than new aswell.

Since upgraded my recap by replacing all secondary side capacitors (thats all the electrolytics apart from the 400 volt one).

This recap was driven mostly by my wish to use up my good capacitors, but also noticed some very subtle issues with DVD playback - osscasionaly when pausing the bottom line of the video frame would be slightly out of allignment (by ~1 pixel). This was immediately fixed after this recap, as was the audio more punchy but this tended to die back down to normal after a good burn in.

Doubled up the Oscon SP, I put in earlier with an extra one on underside, this was quite tricky as the width of Oscon SP is enough to press against the bottom of the DVD player, it fitted but only just, precision was required to ensure no shorts or solder bridging, this keeps better to the original spec of 1000uF in this position. To use such a high quality cap in this position I'm not sure is necessary as it only supplies power to the laser. A cheaper series without Oxygen free feature such as Oscon SA or SC, or plain Rubycon, Panasonic would probably be more than perfect.

The smaller Jenpo 10v 100uF were replaced by my nearest equivalent, Panasonic FM 470uF 16V. Purely because I have hundreds of fresh 470uF that need using before their best before date, though I keep them in an almost air tight container in a cool dark place - not like some of the crap you get on ebay - thank goodness for sand paper.

Lastly replaced the 2200uF 10v G-Luxon with one of the Panasonic FM 16V I had left over from experimenting.

Result is as already stated and no ill effects so far.

umm.. the Cyberhome 400 was this thingy with a modified Cyberdrive PC DVD drive right..?!

have one of them here.. running in standby for almost 1 year *lol*
maybe i should check the caps

edit: Cyberdrive DVD and CD(-RW) drives are always named "CW-XXX"

for example CW-088D for a 48x32x48 CD-RW drive..

Sure, after the caps fail it is apparently impossible to repair.

i see a ton of the ilo rebadged cyberhome dvd recorders with bad jenpo and g-luxon caps.
sometimes get huge stacks of these units for free that blink at you or refuse to read dvd's.
its always the caps and 99% of these are perfect after the recap.

sounds like these commit suicide after the caps get bad enough.
all the ones i have done just needed caps replaced.
