Hi there, I'm trying to fix a Vizio p50hdtv10a plasma tv that has a very dark picture. I tested the boards with my multimeter and found out that one of the IPM modules on the z-sustain board has shorted out. I sacrificed the part by breaking the pins loose with a small flat head screw driver. I was able to get most of the pins out using some small tweezers and a 30W soldering iron. However, some of the pins are really stuck in the holes and I couldn't remove them with my iron. I tried adding solder the the pins but that didn't work. Is there another way I can remove these stuck pins without damaging the board with too much heat? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Trying to remove stuck IPM pins
Get yourself some of this stuff.
http://www.chipquik.com/store/produc...ucts_id=210001
And the cheapest place to order from is here if you have prime shipping.
http://www.amazon.com/ChipQuik-SMD1-...words=chipquik
I started to use it a while back and I have removed several of these IPM's I am working on the same TV you have listed right now.
I have a JBC soldering & Desoldering station and also a Hot Air station and as far as I am concerned this stuff is worth the money not to damage the board.
I can remove the IPM with out damaging the board or the IPM NO BREAKING pins! and I bet that even the 30W iron you have might still get the job done.
Hope this helps!Last edited by dolivas27; 06-22-2015, 06:13 PM.

Re: Trying to remove stuck IPM pins
Yes it does I add it to the pin's with a soldering iron and use the hot air station to keep it molten.
You can also do it with the solder iron but you have to keep heating the pins. He stated he had already broken the pins off so this would work EXCELLENT for him.
I have also used this before I purchase the hot air station.

When I worked for Ameritech 15 or so years ago I opened the first Motorola cell phone repair center in Michigan and this was the tool they used at Motorola and what we were trained to use. (Before hot air station became affordable)

But it's probably not built like it used to be plus mine says Ungar on it not Weller I think Weller purchased Unger several years ago.

Re: Trying to remove stuck IPM pins
I advise against purchasing expensive equipment to remove IPMs (chipquick is also ridiculously expensive for what it is).
There's a very simple and inexpensive way of doing it:

We gave them technology, the latest, the kind even Vietnam didn't have. They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."

Re: Trying to remove stuck IPM pins
I've used the chip quick stuff before, it works really well. It is on the expenisive side for no more of it than you get, the good news is, it's like Brylcreem, "Just a little dab'll do ya!" You just need enough of there to stay molten long enough to do what you're wanting to do.

Re: Trying to remove stuck IPM pins
Using a hammer and screwdriver is just crazy......... Do it right or don't do it!
Yes chip quick is more expensive than it should be but like DesertRat stated you don't need a lot and I am cheep so I reuse the stuff once the IPM is off just use your iron to pool it up in a ball and reuse later.....
Try removing a HDMI connector off an Onkyo HDMI board even with hot air your going to ruin the HDMI board with a little chip quick I have removed and repaired several boards.
Ruin / Save one board and chip quick has paid for itself.
To each is to own but like I said I will never not have it on the bench to be used when needed.
I never recommended purchasing expensive equipment! I was just stating what I have and I make money with my tools so I tend to purchase the best the first time. Cry once or bitch for the rest of your life how a tool does not work right.
Plus I always look at it this way if you never try anything new how will you know what works and what doesn't.
If you do use the Chip Quick please post what you think of it.
Talk to you soon......Last edited by dolivas27; 06-23-2015, 10:40 PM.

Re: Trying to remove stuck IPM pins
Yes, but does chipquick give you enough time, considering the amount of pins on the IPM?
I would also imagine that you would have to clear away as much as the tin solder as possible so as not to adulterate the chipquick alloy.
And then you would also have to make sure to remove as much chipquick solder as possible, because if it mixes with the fresh solder, it will make it brittle."We have offered them (the Arabs) a sensible way for so many years. But no, they wanted to fight. Fine! We gave them technology, the latest, the kind even Vietnam didn't have. They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Re: Trying to remove stuck IPM pins
If I get some time I will do a video so you can see it in action.
Yes I do add some solder and then remove it with the desoldering station or solder wick.
Yes it would make it brittle I always remove all or at least most of it.
When I do the video I will try it with just an iron and solder wick. And then maybe another video using the desoldering station and hot air station.
In that video is sure look like he had left most of the old solder with the chip quick in it.
