Thanks nomoresonys, I did a factory reset, but haven't done a firmware update. That might do the trick. Thanks again!

This is a picture of the TV working today. I left it unplugged overnight and I had to do the dimmer on/off drain mentioned above to get it going again this morning.

Another symptom I discovered last night is, when you turn the TV off the screen will go black, then after about a minute the screen lights up again, but with no picture or anything. When you hit the power button, the LED's dim down to almost out, and it sits there like that until you turn it back on. Almost like a sleep mode, instead of completely shutting down....

  • Vizio M3D550SR won't turn on unless....

This has been an interesting project. It was given to me DOA with unknown problem. I've diagnosed it down to the dimmer and BL_On or the on/off. I've uploaded a picture of the main board with arrows to the parts I've replaced on the main board. The picture of the power supply is included for reference.

Here's what it's doing at this point since it's no longer DOA. I can do a continuity test to ground on the dimmer and BL-On connectors, and the TV will require a hard reset (holding power button down on TV for 30 seconds) to come on. When it comes on, you can do anything you want,...

Yes, they are, and I really tried, and try, to handle them very gently. But sometimes they accidentally catch on something, and you don't even realize it.

I took a piece of the heat resistant material under the tuner and sliced off a small piece of it, to make a wedge between the tab and the metal bezel. The bezel applies pressure to keep it in place, when it's fully attached. Hopefully it will last a while (the overall hot patch). This did fix the problem, and the set is back in working condition. I'll post some "after"...

Never give up!!! That is unless you know it's dead no doubt about it.

I decided to look into something this morning on the remaining tabs on the bottom of the screen, but also the side ones that I didn't take off. I powered up the unit with the tabs exposed so I could hand touch each one and see if there was a problem. Lo and behold, I touched a tab on the lower left side (from the back), and the screen came to life! It turns out I probably disturbed the tab working on the leds, and caused the loose connection. I am going...

    Budwich,

Thank you for all your help and understanding of how all this works together. I inspected the bottom tabs and boards to see if there was any obvious issues. I even used the magnifier on my loupe to see if any of the connections showed any abnormalities. I couldn't find anything wrong, so I put things back together to protect it.

I did find/order a "New (other)" t-con board that was supposed to have been pulled from a new TV with a broken screen. I think it will be my last ditch effort. If...

    Here are pics:

To explain, the tabs were removed from the right side facing the screen. I named the pictures with an explanation for their name.

I measured voltages on the 2nd t-con board like I did on the one, and they all check out the same as the 1st one that was in the unit while the IC went bad.

Tomorrow I'm going to examine the connections on the bottom of the panel to see if there are any issues there that I can see....

No problem on the long post, thank you for the explanation. It really helps to understand the process. I'll start by bring you up to speed on what the problem was in the beginning. This will be a little long too.

This thread here was part of the beginnings of the problem.

    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=74149

The original problem was, there were 31 leds shorted on the two boards. Twenty three on one side and 8 on the other. The TV was working fine with the exception of...

  • Re: Samsung UN46ES6003FXZA panel question

Could this be the reason I'm getting the results I'm getting?

I was thinking about this situation this morning and thought about which side the tabs were on that I removed. It just so happens that the tabs were on the same side as one of the t-con connections for the panel. If one connection to the t-con handles the vertical, and the other handles the horizontal, I may have pulled the first tabs off in the circuit for the horizontal. Thus losing the connection to the other side of the panel where the other tabs are still...

I do have a second t-con board for this TV, but like I said, I'm not sure of it's true condition. I bought it used, and haven't tested it on a known good TV to see if it actually works. So, I'm not sure if the results would be too helpful. But I will test the same TP's and see what I get. Especially on the previously circled test point. I haven't given up on it yet. I'll do some more checking on things.

Ok, with the ribbon cable disconnected on the t-con board for the missing tabs side, I get a black half screen on that side, with a blue/purple screen on the connected side. If I switch sides on connection with the missing tabs, I get a solid white screen. No indication of color but white.

I did do some voltage testing on the t-con board and on (or near) the TP's there is a voltage reference for some but not all. In the picture I circled the one in question. On this TP I got a -6.31 volts instead of +11 as the reference suggests....

Budwich, a picture of removed is attached. I checked all 6 of them 3 on each side and the burnt one in the original post is the only one burnt (middle tab in picture), or showing even any small amount of heat. Note: the one with the torn portion, I made sure that all of it got removed, not just the larger portion in the picture.

The ones that connect to the buffer boards along the bottom all look good as well. No signs of overheating on any of them, or tears.

That is correct, if I turn the set on presently,...

Budm, thank you for the suggestion on the t-con. I had wondered about that myself, but I'm still learning. I appreciate all of your help and the other guys as well. I wasn't sure if there was any way it could have damaged something somewhere else in the system. But I did wonder after what nomoresonys said. I made sure there wasn't any residual material on the place where the tabs were removed. So why didn't it work for me too? Went through my head.

I tried a second tcon board after the removal, but got the same result. However, I can't say for sure that the second tcon board even worked, without any other issues. It was a used one and in unknown condition (only word of seller) at this point. It's worth a try, if I can find a "new other" type....

  • Re: Samsung UN46ES6003FXZA panel question

Thank you nomoresonys, it's possible there could be something more going on inside the panel in a bad way. I did a test pattern and there was a pattern, but it looked like the wrong resolution, kind of like using 16 bit settings on your computer display instead of 32 bit. I tried a different main board, but still got the same resolution, even after a reset. So it may have been dying and I just helped it along....
